trans X

the number one cause of tranny problems around here
is driving your diesel mb rough... yes, rough housing...

you kick it, and break the kick down switch and other assorted items or
you kick it and get something stuck in the valve body....
then you dont correct it right away and it leads to slippage...

I had been having major problems..... i replaced the kick down switch under the gas pedal and the little plastic fingers on top of the valve cover...
then i changed the fluid to mobil one synthetic atf and i put a quart of trans x in it..... I drove to cleveland oh from louisville and back 550 miles and now the car actually will take off without slipping.....the improvement did not happen until i had put in a 2nd qt of trans x... one last month and one this month...

I had great success with it smoothing out the transmission but it could not fix the enormous leak in my front seal. My friend put some in his Chrysler k car and it got the transmission shifting again. Who knows how long it will last but the $8 is probably worth the extra miles you can squeeze out of it.

What is it, and how does it work? Is it really thick? Is it a cleaner? Is it really thin? I have no idea how this stuff is supposed to do what it does.. Can anyone who knows more about automatic transmissions let us in on the theory behind TransX?

peace,
sam

i bought

i bought an old fashioned elec fuel pump before fuel injection.
a couple of plastic tubes and i attached it to my battery..

i slip the pipe down the tranny tube and i am able to suck out about
3 quarts of atf... i did that for a couple of months about once a week
and replaced it with mobil one atf.... that was after a filter and fluid change.

i am about to change the fluid and filter again... all in all its been 6 months.

Sam, Trans-x is a petroleum miscable solvent. It loosens up gummy deposits in the valve body and varnish-like buildup on the friction surfaces on the brake bands and clutch plates. It fixes a lot of slipping problems associated with valve body hangups caused by gum and hard buildup on the plates and bands that prevent them from holding. Great stuff, it really is. Won't fix worn out seals or worn out plates or bands, but only a rebuild will fix those.

If you have a mity-vac hanging around you can use that too.

Some products swell the rubber o-rings and seals. Does it do that as well?

I think the Trans-X is available in two cans... one of which says ' leak seal ' also.... only certain types of rubber seals will be helped...and it is not intended as permanent fix... although it may last a long time..
Paper gasket leaks won't be helped because it is not trying to fill gaps like ' radiator leak products'.... only if it can Swell the rubber is there a chance of working...

that's a good question. I should have saved some of the rubber removed from inside the tranny when I rebuilt it. Maybe I still have some to toss in a cup of trans-x and see what happens. I'd be surprised if it made much difference, but hey, I get surprised every day.

Will Mobil 1 ATF behave similarly, as in clean the varnish off the clutch packs and such, swell seals, etc? I suppose what I'm asking is- if I don't really have shifting issues save for a slight 2-3 flare, would it hurt to dose it with Trans-X even though I have about 5k on a synthetic ATF service? Or would I be wasting time and $ since the syn ATF does the same thing? What I want to do is be sure I did everything I could to make the tranny last.

It is not my impression that the syn ATF will do the job that Trans-X will... in fact in worse cases it is a two step deal... according to the instructions on the can.. you use it at a slightly higher concentration for the initial attempt to dissolve the varnish built up... then keep a lower percentage for regular use..
The reason is can work is that trans fluid deposits stuff which looks like varnish ... and the holes in a auto valve body are REALLY Tiny.. and some have check balls in them... like 1/8 inch in size... so if you get enough varnish to keep gravity from letting those balls cover the opening they are assigned to then you have a leak... the fluid will not be going to only the route it should be....and various problems can then occur... not the least of which is that the hyd clamping mechanism for the clutches will be less forceful than they should be and that is the same as riding the clutch in a manual car...
Flat wears out the clutch material...

I would drain off a pint of the mobil 1 and replace with trans-x and keep it in there. Also, adjust the modulator clockwise a little. You don't want to drive with it flaring if you can help it, because it wears the K1 frictions, especially the rearmost one.
