If You Ordered The Parallel Kit, Do Not Add The Ground Wire At The End. You Will Totally Destroy The Glow Switch In The Car. I Can't Stress This In Bigger Letters.

Not freezing in California!!

Ok bad joke. You can do a simple fix to keep the engine warm by placing a 60 to a 100 watt light bulb under the hood. Maybe near the injector pump and one by the radaitor. This should keep the under hood temps above freezing. Worth a try it's cheep. This also works for the outside pets i.e. the dog houses.

That looks like the parallel kit. Install the whole kit and remove the existing ground wire that goes from the #1 glow plug to ground. In fact just remove all the existing plugs and wires except the wire that goes to the glow plug nearest to the fire wall.

why does the starting kit appear to be for 5-cyl engines? mine is only a 4 cyl, but the instructions even look as if there are 5 glow plugs needed. then again the kit only came with 4 glow plugs. the starter thing has 5 places for the glow plugs to be connected... i am sooooo confused? what do i do... i am trying to put the new glow plugs in this moment.

I would think you can just wire up your 4 GPs per the instructions. Does the wiring have an extra connector that you need to tape so it doesn't short out? I think those kits are intended to be used for either 4 or 5 GPs.

I could not have said it any clearer than I did in post #34. DO NOT INSTALL THE GROUND WIRE AT THE END. You created a direct short when you did that. Now you may have to replace the pull start unit inside the car. Good luck.

I think that if it starts fine now, you're done. The fact the light was so bright before was because of so much current going through the system directly to the grounded cable. You probably should have blown the fuse. Worst case you could have burned up all the wiring in the car. Does the car start better? If so.. another small victory..

yeah i told my bf not to hook it up, but im pretty sure he forgot... he even read the thread himself, several times. i think he just wasnt really thinking about it and just hooked everything up as it was. but we got REALLY lucky and we didnt blow a fuse or worse yet destroy and of the glow plugs. it does start up a lot better now though. and the indicator still does glow... its simply not as bright. not a big deal though. i dont usually even have to turn the idle up anymore when i start it, which is awesome. so thanks for the help... thankfully we still pulled it off. thanks!
