Help Getting Door Open

I'm thoroughly stumped by this one, so I'm throwing it to the team for suggestions.

When I bought my '82 300D, the rear passenger door would not open. There is something mucked up internally with the rods, cams, springs, etc., since there is no lock button and no threaded rod sticking up through the hole in the top of the inner panel.

The door behaves as if it is locked. The outer handle springs out and back without engaging any mechanism (exactly like the opposite door does when locked). The inner handle does the same thing, but the opposite door inner handle acutally engages the lock mechanism and unlocks the door when pulled.

I have the inner panels off all of the other doors to fix vacuum pods and to replace the carpeting around the door jambs, but I'm stuck on this one.

Anyone know a magic procedure to open broken doors?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
Thanks for posting the year and model. It saves time and makes some of us very happy. The problem you are experiencing is the result of the knob being off while the rod came up during an unlocling sequence. What you need to do is fish around in the hole with a small hook and allow the rod to come up through the hole. Have a knob ready to screw onto the rod when you get it centered in the hole. You can rollthe window down and flex the door panel up some to help.
Good luck
