Question rear bearing sleeve purpose?

I've searched & couldn't find any threads that answer this question. I understand the installation process & what the tension sleeve does, but I don't understand why it's needed. Why can't the rear bearings be adjusted just like the front? I realize the bearings fit tight on the hub & you cannot get clearance once tightened, but how can the bearings be properly set by just simply tightening to the specified clearance? Won't you get excessive clearance after driving a bit? Thanks, Paul. central FL

Actually,

I've driven them, checked the clearance and on some occasions- had to do another adjustment!!

That is a spacer which is colapsable. So you simply crush the spacer till your at the right spot. But, I've been successful with tapping the old spacer a bit with a hammer and then pull it off and re-use it!

Unhappy oh well

I was thinking of trying that myself. All I need are the 2 nuts & seal rings. All my bearings & races are good. Pulled everything apart just to check on things. I should've just left it alone. Everyone treats this procedure like rocket science. I just can't believe that simply tightening & checking with a dial indicator is going to hold proper clearance without fully seating both bearings. I'll assume the outer brg is still on the hub?

If so, yea no problem getting the inner to seat. If the outer has been removed... I'd consider replacing it just because the brg is not expensive compared to your time. If it was damaged in removeal.
For re-installation on thehub, I'd do the heat it to 300F in an oil bath or carefully with a torch and drop it on making sure it seats well. Very old time thing and heat-treatments shouldn't be effective until say 600F.
