Simple question, will the 4 speed from a 240D bolt into a 300D?

Just curious, and too lazy to look up threads at the moment. All I need to know is if the trans from a 79 240D (4 speed manual) will bolt into a 84 300D Turbo 4 speed automatic) without too many issues. If it's not pretty much a direct bolt in swap, I'm not that interested at the moment. Just curious as to if it's a direct bolt in or not. I know some of the 300Ds (non-turbos) had 4 speeds, but havn't seen a factory turbo with one, yet.

Thanks, that's all I need to know at the moment. Might have to buy a new clutch, though.

I wasn't sure if the flywheel or any of that would work from the 4 to the 5, so I'm thinking about all i'd need to get is a new pilot bushing.

Oh, I forgot if the automatic is overdriven or not, but I don't think it is.

the pilot

bearing is ball bearing not a bush. it could be reused if in good shape. new one not too expensive though.

Why Bother

So you do all this work and unless you are towing somethimg you end up starting in second gear and really have A 3 speed manual with a granny gear>

The thread you need to look at is here:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/88699-auto-manual-transmission-conversion-has-begun.html

To summarize, the driveshaft from the 240D will not fit in the 300D because of the longer engine. Either you have to shorten the driveshaft by 4" or find a driveshaft from a manny tranny 300D. The shift linkage will have to be lengthened by 4". And when you get it all done, the front end will sit higher because of the lighter transmission, and the car won't be all that much fun to drive anyway because of the ungoverned injection pump.

I'm doing a swap between my TD and 240D right now, so I hope it works!

Thanks. Found it last night, and several more links as well.

BTW, the Finns are giving me way too many ideas. Kiitos.

i cant imagine what mattdave

is thinking. first gear will not be too low at all. if anything it will be a little too high.

and the shift rods will need to be shortened, same as the ds.

First with the 3.69 rear is about 10mph. Should be around 15-20mph with a 3.07 or 2.88.
