Vote do I buy kid cheap w116 or let you buy it
I just came back from my first look at a 1980 300sd same owner for the last 22 years. Dirt-cheap the owner’s kid thinks he ran it out of oil I did not bring my tools because I need another project car about as much as a hole in the head. The engine cranks but very slow battery is pretty shot.
Maintained well by the owner straight body the under car bushings in good condition no leaks 6 month old cheap but looks ok paint job 154k miles owner just paid registration fees for the year worn but ok interior big bad point no sunroof. The paint job kills it as a money-making car. However my son loves it so you all vote do I go do a leak test on it tomorrow (I am pretty confident he just blew the head gasket) If it is just the head gasket do I buy it for the kid and put the freshly rebuilt head in our garage on it. So you vote should I buy my son this car as a back up for his EURO 1985 300D. On the other hand, should I tell you all where to pick it up for $100 plus $50 towed within 25 miles of where it sits in south San Jose Yes matt gets the car No the car is posted for any one other than matt to buy And boy am I going to tick matt off deciding it this way!! IMO An SD as a back up to a D is not the way to go....I would prefer a 240 as the back up....SO NO let it go.....

There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes-Benz.

mattdave,
But it. At that price its a steal. A rustfree body, even if it doesn't run is worth much more. Wish I could find such a deal. P E H |
$150.00 towed to your house? Snag it, it'll be good for something. You could sell a few things off it and still make some change on Ebay.
In Kentucky there is some kind of law where you have to have at least on car in your yard that don't run, and I've way beyond that quota. |
Vote
I set a member of this group with an 1987 300 for $4oo bucks he took his first drive in it yesterday and sent me a long excited email about how well it worked even though the master cylinder failed on the way home. He has less than 4K in a 603 1987 300 so not all low priced Mercedes are bad buys especially since we have no rust issues. The 240D is a great back up car except the kid is big and the 300sd fits him and his friend. I should maybe mention he had a nice 1979 300sd to use whenever he wanted until I recently totaled it while it was my car he mostly drove and loved it paying for all fuel and up keep. He is not pleased I am doing this but so far, there is 1 no vote and 1 yes vote
Thank you for helping me make this decision please remember to vote. Dave S :) |
Take it!
Yeh... it will be worth more in parts or if your son gets it running... will be a good learning too! You need to buy the neighbors xmas gifts though to keep them from calling the city about your cars!
|
Buy it Dave....

According to early exit polls...
According to our early exit polls it appears that there is a landslide victory for me and my hopefuly new car! I'm looking forward to many greasy hours and long nights in the garage. Many thanks to all who voted (moreso to those who voted yes!).

Why didn't you make an official pole at the top of the page?
I vote "BUY IT." Make sure the frame rails aren't rotted out. :( My Vote: "YES!!!!!!" |

[QUOTE=Glinko]Why didn't you make an official pole at the top of the page?
:sword2: I am computer illiterate I tried to but failed so no cool poll. My son has just apparently decided to play in this fun. Can he really get away with stealing the car by declaring himself victories before the votes are cast, I think not the poll will be closed tomorrow 2PM PST the winner be the one with the most votes yes=happy matt no= matt mad at me for some strange reason. Do not forget to vote YES NO Thank you for your help resolving this family conflict. DAD :sword2: :sword2: :) :rifle: :rifle: :rifle: |
Buy it. 'Nuff said.

Add Another Big Ole
BUY IT!! Oh, you actually wanted me to type yes or no,, so YES!!!
|
Buy it! Which means....YES!!!!!!!!!!!
|
To all those who vote "buy it"
Just so everybody knows who unfair this election is my generous father is not accepting votes saying "buy it" he says the only votes he will accept will be those that clearly say YES. He will of course accept any vote that in any weird or partial way says no; go figure.
I think this is total: :bsflag: --Matt |
YES, buy it!
150$ is cheap, and you'd recover that in the first three parts you sold on ebay. Rust free body worth more than that. peace, sam |

Buy it! all these guys are right on target so alls I can add is that it makes sound economic sense,if you decide to part it out or fix it yourself.
|
If it wasn't on the wrong side of the country I would buy it..(right before my wife strangles me to death)..I have a perfect engine for it.....

"If it was a lot closer I would take you up on that free offer.....but its too far away." 240D thread Lester your wife is going to kill you if she reads these posts!!:D For $150 you really can't go wrong. Heck turn around and sell one of us northern guys the body for $500. A rust free W116 is worth money up here. |

I would have grabbed that 240D for the parts for manual conversion.......and a few other spares and sold off anything else of value to anyone. |
And the winner is
The final vote count is 1 no 14 yes and I would like to point out to my fine son I counted yeh and ja votes as yes furthermore one person was no doubt bribed into six yes votes which were tallied . Tomorrow I will have the friendly code enforcement lady stop by and inform him of the laws against inoperable cars and the $250 a week fine for such offence then I am sure he will be reasonable about paying me $25 to rid him of his problem. MATT WINS of course selling parts off the car like the heater servo on eBay should be allowed to help fund the parts needed to make the car go.
I may post a picture of the last W116 we bought for parts the day it was finely towed off the only person living within a mile who sad to see it go was the 14-year-old boy that would come over to take his anger out by beating the car hulk with a 12LB sledgehammer. I would like to thank every one for getting me in trouble with the wife, neighbors and city but making my son very happy. Any leads on a rusted out W116 parts car with less than 50K miles at a good price we can travel to pick up the right parts car. However it has to look real bad and run real well think see-through doors and a roof so rusted you think it was once a convertible would be a nice touch. Dave S:) :) :) :) |
Awwww......
I love happy endings....
