Sluggish Fuel delivery?

On my 84 300 TD wagon, I have been haveing the following problems:

1) at idle, when idling for an extended time (a few minutes) the car skips and dies, or if I give it gas before it dies, it is "slow to wake up"...misfiring, no power, cant get engine to rev.

2) the other morning when cold, I could start the car, but couldnt get it to rev....as if starved for fuel. Finally after re-starting a few times, and giving it fuel, it finally woke up.

3) slow to accelerate on highway

I put in a new main fuel filter a couple of months ago, but I didnt put in the small screen filter which may be clogged (I doubt it though). However, I looked at this filter last night when the car was running, and I saw very little fuel movement through there, even when reving the engine. Also, little bubble show up in the filter. I recall in the past that when reving, I would see fuel just churning through that little filter.

So, something is clogged (filters, fuel tank screen), or something isnt pumping the way it should. I will check filters, and do some poking around this weekend. Is there a fuel pump on this thing? I couldnt find one in fast lane. With all the work I have done on these cars, I never had occasion to deal with fuel delivery problems, and I dont even know if there is a regular fuel pump?!?!?!

Any suggestions would be helpful before I pull out the tools. Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Mark

When you pop your fuel tank cap...do you get a big "woosh" sound sucking air in?

If so...you have vent lines to clean

You'll have to search to find out...this is a wagon right?

If so...I am not sure...its going to be near the drivers side rear tire (in front of the tire) on most cars...check there first.

Look for a bell shaped thing pointing down...its likely its plugged.

Woosh is bad...you never want your tank to make noise when you open it.

Vac means the lift pump is having to work hard to get fuel = reduced power.

I would also replace the in-line filter, just in case. It's cheap and easy to replace. I once had mine get so clogged I couldn't even blow air through it. If It's good, keep the old one as an emergency spare.

No.

it has a bell shaped cup on the end of the tube. You need to look furthur forward but still in front of the tire. It will be near where the rear suspension arms hooks on.

Yep.

Thats it

What I would do is disconnect the hoses at the tank (except the fuel one running forward) and blow air one way or the other (it has a check valve I think) to clear it out.

You first might just try poking something up that little horn there and see if there is any obvious blockages.

Also you could remove the horn+device behind it and clear it out...if you have a plug in the system...it will be there.

That might be easier than disconnecting the lines at the tank...I forgot you had a wagon
