Injection pump timing 1987 TD Wagon

Okay here goes I just got my head back and bolted it all back together, and I replaced the timing chain and moved the crank bolt forward and fed the new chain through attached of course to the old one.

Now when I was feeding it through the IP pulled wound up and then pulled on the timing chain felt like alot of tension then released ect. I do not know how to adjust the IP and am wondering if I now have to pull the timing cover all apart to set the IP timing???

I have not put the cam back in yet for obvious reason . Any help would be very appreciated in this matter.

Between the rotational springiness of the IP, IP timer and vacuum pump it's normal for the chain to bunch up and quick-feed as you roll in a new chain. As long as you didn't loosen the bolts that hold the IP to the block, IP timing didn't change. As a rough check, set the crank pulley to 15* ATDC and pull the 17mm head bolt from the side of the IP. Run a wire or small screwdriver vertically in the hole in the side of the IP to feel for a protrusion. If the protrusion is more or less centered in the hole then your IP timing is close to spec. If you can't feel a protrusion, give the crank pulley a full turn and try again. You can do a better job of positioning the protrusion if you have an IP locking tool. You can do an even better job if you have a factory A-B light tool (~$300).

603 injection pump timing issue

gvanhouten,

Did you ever get the 603 pump to time right? It surprises me that nobody offered any help. Maybe the post got over looked. I have a SDL body and wondered if a 617 will run in a 1987 body? The junk yard wants to give me about $30.00 for the whole car (body only), but I was wondering if I could drop a 617 in it and get it running good enough to get it out of the yard to a new owner, who might could get good service out of it with a 617. Cracking heads and no information on how to time the 603 has been a nightmare for me.
