Turbocharger upgrade to T3/T4 configuration ?

What would be the recommended (for performance and power) turbo replacement for a 300 S D 1983 3 liter diesel engine  I've heard that you might want to go to a "half-breed" T3/T4 garrett turbo. To what purpose over a straight t4 ? I need an education here guys.

Thanks

I believe its a turbo with a T3 exhaust side and a T4 compressor side, advantage over a regular T4 is that you have a smaller exhaust side meaning quicker spoolup. Advantage over stock turbo? Ability to flow more and run higher boost. Disadvantage over stock? OM617 proly doesnt rev high enought to utilise it, think more lag and running into th governor when you start making decent boost on a stock engine

My turbo has a slightly larger compressor side on it (my other vanes got damaged and I had this larger garret which the vanes/housing fit on the one in the car.

So I swapped them. I really haven't noticed anything other than the top end doesn't fall off quite so much when revving high.

You basically won't notice the difference.

The only way you will notice changes is if you get a faster spool up time (more lightweight compressor).

If you are notoicing you are getting heavy smoke under full boost and all through your acceleration, then that means you need more air.

But these turbos put out plenty for the size of the engine and stock fuel settings.

Adding more air won't get you any more performance...making a "bigger" turbo won't do much either...its just more air :D
