Hmm.. I really can't think of anything non-obvious to look for. Make sure the climate control works and regulates properly. Very good cars - I really like mine but it doesn't really have that "classic" MB feel.

I like them a lot. Just look for the typical MB diesel stuff. Also check for rust. Under the door seals and around the trunk lock seem to be bad spots. ( I can't beleive I need to type that )

Mine got it's first ever taste of road salt yesterday.. It's the beginning of the end The 210's are very prone to rust for some reason. You see it alot around the trunk lid key hole in northern cars.

Yes rust. Ok, I will admit I had a hint of it coming in. Two areas of my E420 were blistering. One, was the infrared sensor undreneath the trunk lock, and two, underneath the grille on the painted section of the hood. Didn't have problems under the door seals, nor wheel arches(I've seen them rust quite a bit, there).

The wagons seem to develop rust under the tailgate handle. There is no gasket or anything there to seal it, so all the salt and moisture finds a home inbetween the handle and the tailgate.

Don't forget the most important place to check for rust: the front spring perches! To be totally assured, you'd need to peel back the undercoating which I'm sure the seller wouldn't like, but turning the wheels all the way in and out and visually inspecting the perches will at least give you an idea whether they're about to snap.

thanks guys. well you guys just gave me some confidence in this car. i was a little skeptical on it but if rust is only the major concern ill make sure to check for that. Otherwise if it runs good with no problems i will probably buy it.

The other main thing to check for are fuel leaks. Check the top of the injection pump and the ground for any leaks. Smell the engine compartment for diesel fuel odor. I'd also feel the upper radiator hose when the engine is cold and make sure there's no pressure in the cooling system. Otherwise if the car drives and sounds good I'd go for it.
