5sp in a 240
Considering the trans swap from 4spd to 5 spd. What trans should I look for to make that swap? Will a 190 5 spd trans fit? Not aware of any 5spd W123 trans.
thanks |

i have one of the old style
fivers based on a four speed with an extra case bolted on the back with a fifth gear. they are extremely rare but there are a few out there. at the prices commanded for them it will be a long payback. but that said i think it will transform a 240 on the highway. the few folks who have them seem to get well over thirty on the highway too. the lower rpms will promote long life for the engine too. so you should be able to get 600k on it instead of only 500k.

Tom
Are you speaking of an arrangement similar to a gear-venders setup? Overdrive is in a seperate case joel |

not really
like gear vendors i dont think. well i am not sure what they look like. i had one on a ford van but it escapes me how it worked. i think it bolted on the back of the tranny, so maybe it is similar.
the way they are made, mb, a little case about 6" long bolts to the back of a standard four speed case with the od gear in it. it is all operated by the floor shifter though. its pretty slick. they are rugged too. tom w

The early ones had it bolted on at the end... later ones had it built in...

yep
i think that all fivers from 123s unless behind the newer 2.3 motor are two piece cases.
