I would worry about the "original soft supple tires" and would hope for the buy it now price it would include a new set.

Was Uniroyals the OEM tire for this car in '79?

WOW, that is a beauty...........but is that milage accurate? I err towards serious pessimism with "time capsules" like this one....this vendor seems to have a high number of them....too many in my opinion.

Certainly looks like a pretty car, but what would you do with it? Drive it into town and park it between the SUVs? Or down the highway behind a truck hauling uncovered gravel? Unless you think you could actually make money by buying and storing it, I don't see the point. With 26 year old seals and hoses it WON'T be as trouble free as a new Toyota, obviously. I wouldn't be comfortable driving it, worrying about what might happen to it. Maybe Mr. Ebayhustler should sell it to a museum.

I would be afraid to drive down the street on a set of 'soft, supple' twentyseven year-old tires.

I'm inclined to trust the miles... This guy obviously has a line on a LOT of estate cars, probably has a brother who's a major estate lawyer in a big old money state out east. If those miles aren't real, then the guy's spent some freakish time under the hood with a tooth brush. I mean, every part looks brand new..

Well, too rich for my blood, but a nice car. Good color, too.

peace,
sam

What year did MB go to the golden coolant ? Looks like the car in the pics has green fluid. Also the brake reservoir fluid looks a little dark. Hope its been changed more than several times, but I bet it hasn't.

how could it get so dark in only 5,3XX miles?

Clean yes...but I would take odds its not as represented.

In 1976 my father bought a brand new Porsche 930 turbo. Silver with a black interior. It cost $26,000 and change out the door from Ogner Porsche/Ferrari. Two months later he broke his leg and couldn't push the clutch. Two months after that he was tee boned by a drunk driver in the family Oldsmobile. His health went downhill fast and he died in 1982. His intention was to put a SB 327 in it

It has under 1,600 miles on it. The AC still holds a little pressure in the lines. The P-7 Pirelli tires cracked and stopped holding air sometime in the 90's. It has always been parked under a cover in a garage. The covers last around ten years. I have a New Years duty to put in a few gallons of fuel and fire it up once a year. Then I drain the fuel until next year. The brake fliud gets replaced now and then and the windshield/headlight washer fliud remains drained.

This next summer I plan to replace the tires, give it a thourough inspection, and drive my 96 year old mother up to Yosemite in it.

Wow, that 930 should be worth serious $$$ if you ever decide to part with it. A 1976 sould be VERY collectable. That's the kind of thing you see at Barrett-Jackson.

Preserve or Drive, Preserve or Drive, Preserve or Drive?

Always the question: what do you do with a low mileage collector car?
Adding miles devalues originality, and letting it sit incurs non-use related problems.

Think of it this way; the original owner averaged 206 miles per year for the past 26 years. Can you afford that lack of economy? I wish I could...

Personally, if the seller is trying to relate the car to a Toyota for utility, it's a statement best saved for his $17k 1996 E320 with 37k miles (item 4593760902) . That's a car for driving.

If I WERE in a position to own this W116, I'd garage it and put some miles on it in the summer. It's not collectible or fragile enough to warrant museum or preservation miles and the current mileage is low enough that if you DID drive 1,500-2k a year, you'll still turn out well at any show. That's a personal opinion and I know there are folks out there who very much enjoy the act of preservation. I respect you all very much! I just don't feel this model historically warrants this kind of preservation -- even though it is the first mass produced turbodiesel. Besides, I bet there's another one in the MB vaults already.

Comments? Please let me hear!
