Ran her out of oil...doh!
I have read those threads before, always wondered how someone could be so careless...
Now it is my turn! My oil pressure guage went way low, I looked and she was out of oil. Wow. Added some and pressure came right back up. Now there is a new noise, like a sqeaking, almost like a altenator bearing going bad... Any thoughts on what that might be? Coincidence or did I do some damage to something? Almost seems like I have a little less power too, but maybe I am just being paranoid. Man, do I feel like an idiot...

How long did you travel with low oil pressure.
I imagined that the oil pressure dipped while you were coming to a stop? I know when mine gets really low it dips when I stop hard. If this is what it was doing, most likely you are safe. Wheres the leak? |

How much oil did you have to add to top it up?
Did the oil pressure gage go to zero, or to something else? Being a couple quarts low isn't going to hurt anything.

Read my thread if you feel like you might have "hurt something" and to give you an idea of duration of safety

Just a guess, low oil pressure for to long will wipe a bearing out though. Although usually the top end is damaged before the bottom end.

it could be a cam bearing squealing. much easirer to fix than bottom end.

10 to 1 it's a rod bearing. I've seen the exact same thing before. There is a rod bearing that got too hot and tightened up. Running much more will snap that rod and put pieces in the oil pan. Consider the engine done for

10:1 my 300SD should ahve been toast when I rolled into newberg with smoke coming from under the hood 4 miles after the oil cooler lines got wasted... but 10:1 it didn't miss a beat...could have drove it home the last 1/4 mile if I was more ballsy No problems 30k later...go figure. Squealing though...not a good sign...atleast investigate the whereabouts if you have the means |

This noise has been observed on a 617 diesel, also run out of oil. By the time you heard the noise you'd likely have snapped a rod in a lesser engine. 617's are tough though.
