Taxable Value?

Just got the title back from our "new" 1985 300d Turbo. The title lists the taxable value as $24,500.00?! That seems awfully high. We paid $1,000.00 for the car. I have to assume that is what the yearly plates are going to be calculated on? Anybody know what is up with that?

Not knowing where you reside make this impossible to help......
You taxable rate will be calculated on a sliding scale of value to date.

EG : My 1983 VW pickup was around $70.00 title and it's $27.00 a year for tag sticker.....bonus is, in Oklahoma there's no emissions/safety test required.

I'm near Denver, Colorado. It was $90.00 to get the temp plates and have title transferred. Don't know yet what the plates will be, not due till Jan 20.

I bought a 1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer once for $200, it was worth about $200 and they charges me tax on a $4500 value in their book. About $250. So tax was more than the vehicle cost me.

Cars over 25 years old are taxed with a different system in many places. For them to justify valueing your car at $24,000 they should need to have it appraised at their cost. There has got to be some obvious mistake there.

Donate it..

I would donate the car TODAY and take the 24K write off...depending on your tax bracket, you can earn at least 8K, and as much as 11K.

Michigan values your car, for plate purposes, on the MSRP when NEW! All vehicles from '84 on are based on MSRP, depreciated for 4 years. So on the 560, I'm paying for plates based on a $53K value, no matter that I saved it from the crusher. '83 and older are based on the vehicle weight.

tax

in minnesota after the car was 7 years old the tax on the car the tab per year are 38.50 to transfer it is 50.00. For the first 7 years the cars tabs go down each year the car get older.Depending on the price of the car,the first year can cost as much as 300.00

NH uses a similar scale, always relative to the original sales price. In the first couple of years it can be really costly...I want to to say about 1% of sales price but then it drops off each year until it reaches a constant small fraction of one percent, I think about 0.3%. For our 2004 it was about $400 to renew for one year, but for my '72 it was only $39.50. Ironically, because my '88 560SL cost $60K new it costs more to register each year than my '98 E300 which was only about $40K. Both are taxed at the same millage but the '88 cost 50% more new so it costs 50% more to register each year.

We have no sales tax here, even on new cars, so paying a fraction of a percent per year to register it is still cheaper than paying 5-9% up front when you buy it.

acastell has the right thoughts here. if the stAte is taxing your car on that MSRP value then you should be able to claim that same value for a donation of it.

michigan law is absurd, i am very sorry for you. knowing this law, i would sell it and buy an '83 or older.

Tom, I think $24K is way to low for the original sticker on a 85 300D. My 82 300D sold for over $30K.
