squeaky steering?? on 92 300d 2.5

i've got some squeaking coming from the left front. sounds like when you get in and out of a wet inner tube. at low speeds or complete stops i can turn the wheel and make it happen. seems to not make any noise when the car is cold or after a decent corner. going over bumps doesn't change it. braking doesn't change it. recently changed the power steering, but it was making the noise before that. has new bilsteins, but they were on 3 months ago. any thoughts?

today i didn't notice it as much. i was wondering if moisture had anything to do with it. i also changed my veggie filter and spilled oil in the general area of some of the steering linakge pieces.

i'm grabbin at straws her...

you probably

have moisture in the boots of your ball joint boots. i have a needle that fits on the end of my grease gun that i use to inject grease in in cases like this.

if you want to go all out you might replace the boot too, but i dont do that til they crack. i have several times replaced just the boots instead of the entire ball joint. if you catch the cracked boots soon enough you can do this while the ball joints are still tight and save a lot of $$$. my front end shop charges about an hour to change two or three, i think.

hot dog.

thanks for the reply. i saw someone mention this in another post, but they said once you poke a hole into the boot, it begins to deteriorate quickly. sounds like i don't have much of a choice.

thanks for the info.

i have done

it many times and never have noticed accelerated failure of the boot. the hole is pretty small though, a needle hole.

Hi David,

I've got a needle fitting for my grease gun if you want to borrow it. How is that silver paint working out?

woohoo! i was just thinking how i could use a bicycle pump and one of those ball needles. i'd love to come over. the por-15 seems great, but it bubbled funny. no problems for now.

thanks rob, i'll give you a call.

stayalert - a real good guy

went over to rob's house where i pumped my ball joints full of grease, and he helped me realize that my fan was ready to fly out of my car.

i didn't hear the squeaking as i drove home, but we'll see how long it lasts. it appeared that i pushed enough grease in that it was coming out of cracked spots in the boot. hopefulyl it lasts awhile.
