I think it has to do with the w123 body having the "older" look...or the w116.

My w126 never seems to get "cool" value from those who understand nothing...heh

I have my 240D but its just too slow for how I drive on I-5 on the way to/from work/school. Its slowness does not make up for my desire for people to "like" my car...they can go eat my smoke.

No offense, but I would never buy anything newer than a w123 or w116. They look awesome, and they have that 617 in them.

I test drove a 240D, and even with the MT, it was way slower than the 300SD. I don't think I could buy an normally aspirated "old Mercedes Diesel." Again, no offense inteded.

Yeah I like the look of the older benz as well...but for 750 bucks I own a w126 300SD so I cannot complain. And I need a car that handles well and has room for modifications and is easy to work on... (comparing the 300SD w116 to w126...not much room in the w116 body for engine mods).

I love the look of the 240D, and its stickshift, and it would be a great around town car (and it is) but I just don't have the space to keep one for town and one for portland.

I would have NO PROBLEM driving the 240D if my route to school didn't put me in traffic/tailgating/passing hell on either barbur blvd. or I-5...if you don't have over 100HP under your hood people will run you right off the road in their huge POS trucks hauling nothing but a crappy bedliner.

I could probably never go without a turbo myself..unless my driving requirements changed or I had place to keep a few cars for varying trips.

I think whats funny is a lot of people from foreign lands

I think whats funny is a lot of people from foreign lands including myself, haven't adopted the American idea of "Yankee Thrift". I should be very diplomatic about how I say this, because some people from foreign lands pick this up very quickly and some people born in the USA disdain Yankee Thrift.
My wife and I have picked up on this and we drive well oiled and maintained junkers. To me, being free and independent of $85/hour mechanics and servicemen is the ultimate idea of Class mobility.
Sometimes, however, I notice people from other classes and societies disdain the idea of homemade and thrift and look down upon it. I see my neighbors with all their 2005 SUV's and Lexuses and we just don't understand each other..............

My wife can't find enough bad things to say about the car. This car is a solid 7 out of 10 in the looks department, and is almost all there mechanically BUT - it rocks/shakes at idle due to some ham fingered mechanic cross threading the rack damper pin (did I mention I do all my own work?) Anyway, she rides in it all the time, but hates to drive. She's about 5' 2 and has a hard time seeing out it. She will complain about low power if she's driving in hilly areas with the a/c on.

I was talking to a woman yesterday, who was parked at the grocery store.
'84 300D Turbo. Beautiful original yellow paint. Less than 50,000 miles.
Garaged since she bought it new.

She was at least 90.
She has no interest in selling it.
I should have asked her how much she'd charge to put me in the will?

My wife loves the 124 and 126 looks and is all about the turbo. She complains they aren't sporty enough but are very easy to drive. Hates the rear wheel drive and probably won't every get one because of that.

As a result, I think I'm slated to have one as long as I want, which is a good thing. Besides, I threatened to get a Scion xB (I love that thing!) and that may get me in a second MB..

I wonder how I can get my wife to understand the many quality points on these fine units?

Wife loves her 85 300SD cuz she gets alot of comments about driving a "luxury" Mercedes. Daughter likes her 83 300D for the same reasons. I like the 83 300TD for all the obvious reasons plus no one else wants to drive the "hippy wagon". Fine with me.

Ra - Sounds like your in love with her car. OK, so propose already.

My wife and daughter and granddaughter both love the VW TDI because its fast. My wife (love her dearly !) likes driving fast so much so that on a recent Porsche club outing she got a speeding ticket in her VW Cabrio ! The trend in our family is that fast automatic cars are most loved by the girls which kind of means that I am the designated driver when we take the 240D. The other trend I notice is that the girls also love the idea of being passengers in the 240D because of the style factor of the car.

That leaves the other cars for me to drive, except my daughter, who does drive a manual - very well, who has been allowed to drive the 944T or the 325IX - which undoubtedly will be hers someday.
