81 300d Questions
Hello again-
I recently posted a thread that my beautiful '81 300D was diagnosed with a blown out oil pump and in turn the engine is kaput! After much deliberation and thought, I have decided to get a used or rebuilt engine to put in the ole' girl and get her back running again. Simply put, I love the car too much and only enjoyed driving for around 3 months before this happens. Does anyone have any thoughts on what would be a decent price to get an engine installed, and also any knowledge as to some viable places to find a used or rebuilt engine. I have already done a search on Junkyarddog.com and got a few responses but need as many resources as possible. Thanks for your help! |

Benzcat,
Your '81 must be in very nice condition for you to consider having an engine replaced. Honestly, you can probably replace the car for less than a mechanic will charge you to do this job. You may want to consider doing it yourself....it is not rocket science after all. The most needed piece of equipment you would need is an engine hoist, and a decent floor jack is of help also In your area (Ohio), I would look for a good running Benz with a bad body. It would be the least expensive source for another engine

Another decision is whether to go back with a non-turbo, which I think might be harder to find.
I wouldn't go through the trouble unless the rest of your car is cherry. Otherwise, the advice to find another car and use your's for a parts car does have merit.
