1982 300D starter replacement

Anybody have the Procedures - Pictures - Insight into replacing the starter on a 1982 300D. I have used ther search and went to skinnerbox's site but the starter page comes up as an error message, page not found. We will be replacing my son's, starter next week. The starter kicks out too early. Takes forever to get it started. New glow plugs.

Thanks for any and all responses.

Joe

This tread will give you some idea of what you are getting into:

Tackling a starter, need suggestions (and sympathy)

The biggest issue is the top bolt on the starter is hard to get to, and can be very difficult to remove. I had my starter replaced by my mechanic, and watched him remove the bolt with the car on a lift. I doubt I could have gotten it out with out the lift and the correct tools. YMMV.

Thumbs up

Seemed so much easier to yank it out in the boneyard than that procedure outlines.

lessons learned

i had a '79 240 stick that needed a new starter or so i thought. i can't help you with the procedure, but here is my experience from many moons ago......

.....went to the dealer and paid 400 bucks for the 100 pound starter. 4 bucks a pound. installed it and it was grinding within a week. took the car to the dealer, replaced the ring gear and bought another starter and it was also grinding within a week. three starters, ring gear, lots a labor, towing, batteries with the bottom sucked out of them, a wrecker driver that cross connected a battery and blew the caps off of it. thousands.

i ended up tapping into the key circuit and mounted a voltmeter to the windshield. every time i hit a bump the starter would engage while the engine was running.

i spent thousands over a 30 part because of a simple mis-diagnosis. i'm older and smarter now. i just say 'fix it.'
