You plugged your crank case vent? If so, you may wish to rethink your action.
BAM! Goes your engine

I'm confused , what did you seal to keep the oil off your air filter?

First off guys, no I didn't seal off my CCV.

Secondly if you did...it wouldn't do anything other than push on the IP side of the shutoff solenoid on the IP and simply shut the car down with a slight pressure.

Anywho, back to what I actually did to keep oil off the filter:

First I removed the cover of the air filter, then bent the two tabs up on the oil catch can. I removed the lid and cleaned it up REAL well with some brake cleaner and did the same with the lip on the catch can itself. Then I took off the 90 degree elbow piece that directs vapors down into the intake air pipe (the black plastic one) and cleaned it up all nice.

Then I used a bit of clear silicone on the 90 bend and installed it onto the cover to the can where it belongs...using enough silicone to seal that all up.

Then I put a thin layer around the lid of the catch can where it would mate with the can itself. Again using just enough to seal it properly.

Then Put the lid back on the can and crimp down the tabs and let it sit for some time to cure before driving and exposing to oil.

ALso make sure your tube on the top (the rubber one) is soft and plyable otherwise it will leak and spit oil all over the intake where it doesn't belong as well.

With this setup I sucessfully kept oil off my air filter and only picked up some odds and ends...light speckling at times...no oil soaked nasty like I had before

I appreciate the advice but I think I understand the concept of CCV...also it wouldn't pop anything other than shutting down the engine.

Thanks..

i think the boneheaddoctor is right, regulator might be your problem. my car was doing the same thing. the bettery is new and the alternator test good at autozone. my car would run for for a few days and then the bettery would quit. finally i took the alternator apart and put in a new regulator. cost me $6.50 at a local warehouse. no problem at all since then.

I just had a new regulator installed last year. I get ~13.85V when the car is running.

2 weeks ago i did a brake job on the front brakes..2days before that i drove to my friends house, it sat in the driveway less than 1h, and wouldnt start. tried to jump start it..wouldnt do that..barely cranked.

i started my brake job...(caliper piston got stuck--long story--see other thread "you fix one thing and two...") car sat for 3 days. Wouldnt start at the end of those 3 days--threw it on the charger got it started and took it to 3 places to test. 1) Advance = Alt BAD--barely putting out-BARELY. 2) (after 2h charge up on the battey) Autozone ALT = OK. 3) Carr's (my mechanic's) ALT = OK.

As time progressed it got harder and harder to start the car. I checked voltage at the battery when the car was running it was always 13.8or better.

On friday, it died. wouldnt start at all. I checked the power draw on the battery (when the car is off/doors closed) and it was .02amps. I used a brand new tester.

Friday Night- I charged the car up-got it to start-drove on the highway (nothing running just headlamps) for 30m-45m @ 70-80mph. When I got home, I turned off the engine, waited 2-3minutes and tried to start it....it choked, the locks cycled and nothing.

On satuday i threw it on the charger for 4 hours. Started right up on the first crank. nice smooth idle. Same thing this morning...Its progressivly getting harder to start now...not very noticble but i can tell.

Thats the full story.

Tomorrow i am going to call my mechanic and see if he's ever installed AL129X alt on a 617. Im gonna have him install me one. I think the alt is working intermittely, but, i could be wrong it could be something else, but i cant fathom what could drain a battey in under 2min.....

EVEN if it isnt the alt there is no downside (that i can see) in putting the AL129X.

Thoughts?

Kris

havent read

every word on this thread but you could have a bad ground. when it heats up it may not work. hot and cold affect current flow negatively. so it might start up in moderate temps and a few minutes later when the motor is good and hot act like it has a dead battery.

had this in my 62 fintail about 30 years ago. very frustrating.

I suspected a bad ground too eariler on...

It is possible that the regulator is being intermittantly problematic..

I would check resistance between the engine block and the battery ground itself...espically while cranking.

Should be VERY low resistance (near 0)

I would check this out next time it gives you grief...

guys, for the AL129X i see that it was installed in this w123

it looks a bit tight but when i look at the area where my alt is i dont see much of anything in the way that AC hose is mentioned in the photo---i dont have one there. the area in my w126 is fairly clean. I dont have any hoses comes over top the alt or anything.

do you think there will be much trouble puttin the 129X in?

I told you before...I PUT ONE IN MY CAR!

And since we have the same car, it is not that much trouble to put in...I did it in the driveway (gravel) and wasn't even dicking with it long enough to bother my back.

Easy day job if everything goes right
