lightning strikes twice

both 240's have lost their glow plug lights and evidently their glow plugs lighting.

its dark and snowing and i am exhausted so i am not pulling a carrameow and laying around cars tonite. tomorrow i am going to look for the source of the problem.

one will start with the 200 amp charger running and the key cranked all the way over. last nite i had to crank the key and hold it. today again with the 200 amp charger. have not introduced starting fluid yet but am ready to do so after disconnecting the gp's. the other just started acting up but needed a 200 amp jump thursday. tonite there was some compression but just no start.

first the glow plug fusible link.

what comes next? checking the ohms to the plugs?

Both of them have lost one or two plugs.

Pull the connector from the side of the relay and check the resistance to each plug.

Bet that you will find a couple of them open (infinite resistance).

Check for +12vdc on any glow plug when the key is turned to the glow plug position. If you do not have +12vdc on any glow plug, suspect your glow plug relay or the fuse in the relay

just got the volt meter working again. bad fuse. there must be humor there somewhere.

i suspected the fuse in the gp relay and checked one car tonite after the "help" call. it was fine. the car battery was just on the trickle but it measured 14 volts so i turned it off.

tomorrow for the plugs. thanks guys.

GP failures aren't that unusual, I've replaced one in the 240D and three in the 300D within the last few months. I think they just get more of a work out when it gets cold out, and the marginal plugs fail.

Strange, I guess you'll find out if they are burnt out when you check them. I can't think of any reason they would burn out that quickly, maybe just random failures. What brand of GPs?

did you use

bosch gps?

they are the best i think. but they do fail sometimes. july shouldnt be failing yet, but it sounds like gp failure for sure. but that includes lack of power to the gps. so could be a loose wire or bad connection or such. you will prob find it tomorrow after a good night sleep.

good luck

I think they're usually pretty good, but who knows if you may have gotten a bad batch. Just another thought, when you jumped the cars with your 200 amp charger, is it possible you subjected the GPs to significant higher voltages than their 11V rating? Do you know what voltage your charger is putting out?

I got you beat sir!

I put in a set when I got the car, put in a set sometime after that, and then another set again (all in about 9-10 months time)

My problem? PO had a bad taste in shops and my violet wire was seeing some undue interruptions when the engine was still warm hehe.

i haven't read the rest of the posts since my last but here is what has transpired today.....

both cars measure .5 to 1 ohm at the gp relay and the volts at the plugs are 10-14.

i bought a new class 49 duralast today and tried it it both cars to no avail including the spraying of starting fluid and wd 40 all under hunters watchful telephone voice.

the oil is 15-something syn mob 1. maybe it is too heavy but also now need to have the charging system looked at by an indy.

thanks for your interest and help..

Added note:

Added note:
Engine starter RPM drops like a brick, even with a NEW battery.
You need a starter AMP draw test on both cars, need numbers.
I did not like the sound = crank speed my ears heard, too slow.

and now for something completely different

blondie has developed a list over the left front tire. from a few feet away you would swear that the inner fender is resting on the tire. pix to come.

i think that is the end.
