1998 e300 td, defective lamp???

I am getting "defective lamp" warning on display and I have found a burned brake bulb which I had it replaced but the warning light is still there. Anyone shared the same problem? Thanx.

Did you use the exact wattage/replacement bulb? Its probably really sensitive to such things. Also, if you did, just unplug the battery then reconnect it, that will reset the computer and it should make the warning go away.

You don't need to disconnect the battery to get rid of a bulb out indicator. It will go out upon restart once the bulb is replaced.

it does go away upon restart, but when I push the brake pedal it comes back on again. I am thinking maybe a bad switch under the pedal or something similar??

More likely corrosion on one or both of the brake lamp sockets. The manual for my '96 says that the third lamp is not monitored, but your car may be different.

Also check the connectors where the taillamp modules plug into the wiring harness.

Again carefully check all the bulbs for the proper wattage. I had an issue where occasionally I'd get the bulb warning light on. Finally trace it to the fact the dealer replaced the third brake light with a 7 watt bulb versus the 20w that was required in that socket. Usage of american equivalent bulbs, versus osram might also give you different results.

problem found. The little socket where the bulb goes into did not stop where it was supose to stop when you turn it, so I have played with it until I have found the right place. Thanx for all your help and sugestions, you guys are great. Joe
