Guess what's more fun than putting the engine fan on a 1982 300D?

Guess what's more fun than putting the engine fan back on a 1982 300D?

Give up?

The answer is, bolting the engine fan back on a 1982 300D BEFORE putting the fan shroud on....pausing for about 10 seconds...cursing....then removing the fan so you can put the fan shroud on, and then putting the fan back on again.

Nothing like 3 weeks since dissassembly, and 20F weather at 2:30AM to help you do something nice and stupid (not that I wouldn't be just as capable at 70F at 2:00PM).

Pete.

That car has got have the worst designed radiator fan. I remember having to grind off my wrench to get it on the bolts, and they're no fun to access. I'd say both my 240D and E300D have much better designed fans. You don't need any special wrench on the 240D and the E300D has only one center bolt, though it's helpful to have the special stubby socket and pulley holder from MB to remove it.

Oh trust me I know all about how cold weather can affect your judgement...about 3 years ago I swapped my DOHC ZC twin cam engine out of my honda for a B16A1 after Christmas outside with a tarp suspended to keep off the falling snow......ended up with frostbite....not a cool thing to do, and my hands never got numb much less uncomfortibly cold.

I actually did order the special tool from them, but found that I couldn't get it around the bolt heads. I ended up using a regular cheapy 10mm that fit fine and didn't strip the bolts.
