too-tall rear springs '79 300td

Hi, all--PO installed too-tall rear springs to increase load-handling capacity(I guess). Car sits about four and a half inches too high in rear, has bad positive camber, which makes for fishy handling, and mighty whumps from rear cavern. Hydraulics seem still to work. Anyone have a used pair of stock springs they'd part with, or would I be better off getting new ones? Thanks, Glassman

I have a set of rear springs from a 1982 300TD wagon. They are in great shape. I replaced them with new ones when I did the complete front and rear suspension rebuild.

300TD REAR suspension rebuild

300TD suspension rebuild progress

The ride height of the car was normal when removed. The car was converted to a daily driver so I did a complete suspension rebuild, as well as a couple of other system rebuilds in the car. The springs are original to the car. I have all receipts that show no spring replacement and have owned the car since 1990

$75 plus shipping.

Now if your really doing a complete suspension rebuild. I have front coil springs that are brand new. I installed them and thought the car was sitting to high. I reinstalled the OEM springs and the car was still to high. Once the suspension was aligned and driven, the car settled to its normal height. I still have the new (installed once but never driven on ) springs.

$100 plus shipping.

Or if you want I can give you the dimensions of the OEM springs and you can cut your current ones to the correct height. Notice the picture. The springs are not symmetrical. Which may affect the cutting of your springs.
Also do you have the correct coil spring compressor? you will need it to remove the install the coil springs.

are you sure

you dont have a malfunction in the self leveling device?

the springs that high seems a little unlikely.

or maybe he told you he did.

Have you tried to adjust the valve assy (via the linkage arm) ? Remember if you do to have the wagon on ramps as it will crush you) See if it is just hydraulically adjusted too high....

I'd put a hose on the bleeder at the top of the control valve and open it up. If the rear end is sagging with all pressure released, you know your control valve is stuck on "fill" for some reason.
