I bought an '87 124 Gasser. Am I crazy?

Poor fellow in town has gotten in way over his head in a used car lot. He went in $500,000 in the last year and has only sold two cars. He is now trying to liquidate. He had a nice '87 300E with 134,000 miles on the clock and I tried it out and was impressed with how smooth it was. LSS, I paid him $1500 for it and drove it home. This engine is so smooth running. It's an in- line six and I have no earthly idea what I have gotten myself into.

I am going to have to replace the cruise switch and so I have been searching the archives to get info on how to safely remove the steering wheel without getting an airbag in my face. The cruise works sometimes but the switch is "floppy". It feels broken if that makes any sense.

Anyway, by the time I pay the sales tax on the car and get the title in my name I will have about $1600 in the car. I would really like to see it go! My Chevy Silverado might get a little jealous with another gasser in the yard.

Kevin

Hopefully you will like the gasser. That indicated milage was never considered too high on their gas engines years ago and as someone mentioned with fuel injection they seem to go much farther today. If you drive it for years and years it eventially will start smoking like a diesel anyways. I too would get very accurate information about the safe removal of the steering wheel pertaining to this specific brand. You have unfortunatly not provided enough information for a comment on your sanity though. But I might have misunderstood. Usually it's when you buy the 87 diesel you ask if your head might be cracked.

I myself would like to have one of those, they seem really nice, and there's the plethora of parts for them, as the 300E 124 model was the single most produced/sold/bought MB model EVER. (over 104,000 units in its 1987 through 1994 production run) No shortage of parts etc....thats for sure. I'd say the biggest probs with that particular model are the head gasket every 100-125k or so, and the evaporator for the A/C, which is probably the biggest flaw on the 124 series cars. Nonetheless I want one!!!

I must admit, the 300E is a very nice rig.

They usually bring top dollar around these parts with over 200k on the clock...ie...the car is getting close to done and they don't want anything to do with it.

I guess the lack of numerous amounts of them online shows you how much people like them that get them

But I'll still drive the ole' 300SD

I would like one only in addition to my SD, never to replace it. SD is priority #1, and I'll own it until I die, or longer.

I would love to drive a 300E, hell any w124 really... they have what, 170hp and how much torque? Bet they're pretty quiet engines, how do they compare of BMW sixes of the same era?

pawoSD must be thinking about the later 24 valve M103 when he mentions the head gasket. The 12 valve doesn't have that problem. It's Achilles heel is valve guides and valve stem seals. When it starts smoking on startup and after idling for a few minutes, you'll want to look at that.

Ah ok, I think I have read too much about way too many different engines. This is good to know, because I was going to avoid the ones that had that problem, and if the earlier 12 valve ones don't, I'll look for one of those eventually....

My indie just bought a w116 280 SE euro manual with 54K from one of his customers for peanuts- I'm drooling over it. It looks nearly brand new

I'd rather have a W123 coupe with a 2.3L 4 cylinder gas engine.
Hey wait a minute, I already have one.
On that note, I'd rather have any W123 with a gas engine than a W124 diesel or gas. The W124's are a perfect example of how MB started cutting quality out of their cars.

I am enjoying mine...

this ol' car really runs smooth and the drive and ride is amazing. I have an '82 SD, an '81 300D, an '84 190D, and by far this '87 300E drives and rides better than any of those. My other's ride great but this one is just a little more "gooder" (Georgia egeekayshun).
