96 E 300 diesel crossover pipe fitting
Just finfished replacing glow plugs on 96 E 300 non turbo diesel & when reassembling I noticed that the sleeve (with 2 rubber bushings) between crossover pipe connecting into EGR pipe.
Question - This sleeve appears to be a compression type & inserting it will require some persuading. One side will easily go into the EGR pipe side, while neither will easily go into the crossover pipe end. I can try some soapy water or other lub to ease getting it in, but I'd like to know if it matters which end goes where . This sounds like a question I had before my college years. Thanks |

As you may have noticed the sleeve has different sized ends. I spray some SuperLubricant on the rubber seals before assembling. The side of the sleeve that won't go easily into the EGR side of the intake is the correct one. It's supposed to be a tight fit.

I smeared wheel bearing grease on the large o-rings to facilitate reassembly.

That is a fiddly piece, isn't it. You can also loosen up the bolts holding the EGR valve bracket to the engine(I'm not with my car now so I'll stick with that description of the gizmo - but it should be obvious when looking at it) which will give you more play to fit that connection piece into the crossover, etc.

on my x-over tube, the single bolt that holds the end with the dual openings snapped. Don't now how as I always use some auto-grase ont ehtreads before assembling. I put another bolt in there for now as the remainder I have to drill out. I'll have to ream it and replace with a proper bolt
