Exactly how much #1 fuel do you use. Give us a ratio 2:1, 4:1.
How does that compare to what's written in your owners manual? danny

I will put my money on to much #1 fuel or bum glow plugs. The valves have been properly adjusted right?

It was about 12 below here last week. I don't have a block heater in the 85 300td and at that temperature, after glowing 2-3 times and turning with the starter for about 20-30 seconds, it will start firing on one cylinder but not enough to release the starter. After about another 15-20 seconds more cylinders will kick in and then it will run on its own. Same thing has happened on the 77 300d at those temperatures. I've considered it normal, although precisely why cylinder X fires and cylinders Y, Z... don't is not clear to me.
No evidence of any inconsitent firing at temperatures above about 8 degrees.

kerry,
At that temperature, you are lucky it starts at all. Could be cylinder X has higher compression than the others that don't fire right away. BTW, don't go by the dash GP light. Watch the the cabin light. It will dim slightly when the GP are energized and brighten when the GP relay shuts off. Turn the key to start position just when the cabin light brightens. This should be after about 40 seconds P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 12-14-2005 at 11:50 AM. |
