fuel guage in 220D went kaput this morning
it just stopped working! the guage sits far left, below "R". do you think this could be the bobber in the tank or is this a common failure behind the dash?
it's a '73 diesel 115, 220D |

With a little luck there is an access panel on the floor of the trunk just above the sender in the tank assembly on this model. If you have an ohmmeter just remove wire from sender and touch probe to terminal. You should register some reasonable resitance to ground if the sender is intact and has a good ground itself. Say five to 100 ohms. Remember I do not have a manual or experience with your model. If you read nothing run a new ground to a known good ground point from the gauge flange. If meter still does does not respond you most likely have a bad sender. The gauge will also be on a fused circuit as well. make sure that fuse is good before trying anything. Your fuse cover may tell you what that fuse controls other than the gauge. If those items are working of course you know the fuse is good. Most of the time on most car brands it is the sender but not always of course. Bad ground for the sender is very common as well. If you wait awhile someone else may chime in with more helpful information. At least I hope so.
