Used motor oil is something I wouldn't even consider putting in my fuel tank. Do it only if you don't give a damn about your injectors, prechambers, IP, and emissions. If you need to dispose of used oil, just about any PepBoys or Kragen will take it free of charge.

My dads not exactly stupid. He is a Mechanical Engeneere. And I've never seen him do the diesel wash on any or the new cars that my stepmom had gotten (or my mercedes when he owned it), but its regular practice in the ranch equipment (john deere, 65 dump truck...) and the challenger and charger. It has to do with the tolerances of the engine.
I was just talking about diesels ability to breakdown motor oil... diesel is a solvet. so it is logical that it could dilute motor oil. and if it is possable to run on motoroil, then the dilution process seems be the way to go. Thats all I was trying to say. Not advocating washing your oil systems... but then agian if you have a 31 ford a diesel wash might be a good idea. Last edited by SirNik84; 12-17-2005 at 01:55 PM. |

In the interest of conversation, have you ever seen a engine fail from this practice? I'm thinking if it was creating failures he would have noticed long go. My own thoughts are I could see the diesel lubing enough at idle, but for a very brief period, like 10 sec or so. 10 minutes would make me nervous. Just as a un-related note, some snowmobile engines don't run injection oil at idle, instead rely on the lubricating qualities of gas to do this. Thank low emission standards for this. Just my 2¢ worth.

Well snowmobile engines are typically 2-cycle and thus they run on a gas/oil mix all the time, not just at idle. They have some of the most horrible emissions.

I ran my 300CD with a mix of used oil and ATF for up to a year before I sold the thing, and it ran fine. I filtered everything out good through a stack of 3 coffee filters. The exhaust however was a little more dirty than normal, but it's a diesel.

No I have never seen any bad results from the diesel wash. And I’m sure that if there were any bad results my dad would have stopped doing it long ago. Maybe I should explain the procedure that he thought me, purely for conversation. (Do not try this at home) basically. You drain your engine oil. Plug your oil pan. You then pour diesel into the oil system. Then turn the car on... seconds will work. You are not trying to do anything other then splash the diesel around. And get it through the pump. Normally you don't do this at every oil change, only when you’re doing a tune up. I’ve done it by starting the car for a few seconds; I’ve also used the starter to turn the pump. Normally if the cap and rotor are off the car you can run the starter and move around the diesel with out having the car start. Then drain the diesel. You will see the diesel is gray with oil debris. Then fill with oil. And you’re done. As I said. The newest car I’ve done this on is my 83 Toyota Tercel. It’s like any non factory authorized procedure... attempt at your own risk. Craig, I see your point. I’m currently being trained to be an engine machinist. So the lube system is a big part of my schooling. But when I think about the bad practices that people do such as not regular oil changes... mixing of weights of oil... pouring almost anything to the oil system. I think that any excessive ware done by doing the diesel wash is the same as some of the bad practices I just mentioned, only it also has the benefit of cleaning your engine. As for modern oil having detergents in them. This is true. But the older machines that we normally use this procedure were not designed for newer oil and are running old oil... or have run old oil in them. Many of the tractors and other equipment had run used motor oil and new tractor oil. So a cleaning every once in a while is a good idea... It’s an up to the owner of the equipment to way the pros and cons and make up their own mind. This whole post was purely for the sake of conversation. Nik |

Burning used oil
I was qurious about burning used oil in my 83 300D considering that I chance the oil every 3000 miles. Used to take it to work and put it in the used oil tank until I decided to try it in my oil burner tank. I now mix 5 gallons in a 275 gallon tank or with the next fuel delivery. With fuel oil over $2.50 per gallon, every bit of savings helps.
