Got wood?

What's a good replacement option for the 20+ yr old dash and door panel wood other than expensive difficult replacement?
I've never had any luck re-attaching it when it warps and falls off.
I was thinking of pulling it all and cuting some vinyl pcs to fit.

This is diesel wood btw.

Mine was slightnly warped, not to bad, but bad enough to not stay on with adhesive. I wen to an office supply store and bought double sided tape, the kind that is padded, about 1/4" thick and used that. Doesn't move, withstands shock. Still strong after almost a year. Worth a try, as long as the finish is still in good shape.

maybe you need to try another adhesive. A suggestion would be a polyurethane based glue, like Gorilla Glue or equivalent. The trick is to rig up something to hold it in place overnight - but IMHO that's far preferable to ripping it off and replacing it with vinyl.

ya the carbon fiber is lighter, so now you might get 50mpg.
i bet it also helps your engine so much that now you can go a million miles.

I saw this title and couldn't figure out how my thread got here, from 'open discussion' ?

The old veneer ( or new veneer ) should stick if you put contact cement
on both pieces and let it dry before sticking them together.

If you are looking for something with which to replace the door panels, which is what this thread sounds like, use tempered Masonite. Available from any building supply. I used it in my 450 slc and it worked great. Eighth inch plywood works better but it is sometimes hard to find. The little plastic studs that hold the panal to the door are available at MB or at your local parts shop.

You can also staple the covering to Masonite which is easier than glue.

i got crazy with the veneer.

still havent gotten to the dash wood or the cracks in the dash, though.

Mr. phidauex, i have not forgotten your piece of veneer, either; i'll send it along with my christmas cards

after looking so long for a wooden heater panel, i finally said 'to hell with this, ill make one. didnt turn out too badly

Nice work.
As far as adhesives go, I've had some luck with a 3M emblem glue. Most of the time the wood is too brittle or already cracked by the time its de-laminating from the metal.
I would think it would be pretty tough to do those 126 door panel curves with veneer.
