1981 300SD turn signals don't like the cold weather
 

When the weather has temps 50 degrees or below overnight, the turnsignals will not work correctly. When engaged, they won't flash, they just light up, and a noise similar to the seat belt warning noise is emitted. After driving a while (or hitting a bump), they function normally. Where should I look first in trying to eliminate this problem?

Turn signal relay and emergency flasher switch.
 

I just solved a turn signal problem on my 81 300 D

The turn signal flasher relay is part of the emergency flasher switch down on the console by the shifter of my car.

Things like coffee and soft drinks have aparently been spilled there, and find an easy path down into the switch.

My switch pried out of the console pretty easily. There are two pressure clips, one on the top nearer the stereo and one on the bottom that I pushed in with a flat head screw driver, and gently lifted the switch out of the console.

My switch was all gunked up. I took it apart and cleaned the peices I could in warm soapy water. Then reassembled and installed the cleaned switch.

I would suggest taking pictures or notes during disassembly, to make reassembly easier.

I have not had a problem with the turn signals since. :)

I'd spin the fuse first. Then go find the flasher, disassemble and clean per RichC.

Good Idea, I miss the simple things alot.

I took my computer apart one time to figure out why it quit coming on.

Then finally checked to see if it was plugged in. :o

Looks like another one of those southern cars that don't like the "cold" temps.... ;)

My signals work fine even if its below 0 out.....:eek: Below 20 degs the only signal difference I have is the force needed to engage the stalk (it gets quite stiff) :D I have a hearty used-to-real-cold SD.... :D
