Is Winter The Best Time To Buy A Diesel?

I noticed on Ebay and also on Craigslist that the people selling their Mercedes diesels are asking for less $, and a number of them went for apparently low prices. Am I wrong to assume that people selling now are more eager to sell due to necessity? I know that sellers usually ask for less for their homes during this time of the year. Since diesels experience more problems when the weather is cold (glow plugs, battery, etc), the sellers may be more willing to sell for less. Is it your experience to get a good deal for a car at this time of the year? For a person looking for a diesel, is this a better time to buy? Any thoughts?

The cold tends to let people get rid of them easier. I almost bought another SD today as the owner said it had trouble starting in Late Nov... when it was silly cold here for this area.

I bet it needed Glowplugs and I'd be off.

Lazy, and or, ignorance...........Any diesel in cold will test maintenance.........if not maintained well expect issues such as burned out glow plugs, the chief reason for problematic starts in cold.........

Want to sell it?

I think you are correct, winter *is* the time to shop for diesels and convertibles. This makes obvious sense.

The last half of December is the best time to hit the wholesale auctions for any car, at least here in Michigan.

I saw a nice looking W123 turbo (silver w/blue interior, even the carpet looked decent) on a Michigan craigslist for $650 this week.

I got mine for $800

in late October (chilly, but not really cold yet), partly because the car took about 10 minutes to start. Two glow plugs later it starts better than my carbed gasser Suzuki.

Great price in the post above. I wonder if it runs.

Seems Dec is a great time in general to pick up vehicles as many people are stressing from the holidays for cash. You can really score some nice things around this time.

I'm seriously considering a W116 SD that broke a tie-rod and has been sitting for a year and won't start now. Bet you a valve adjustment, new battery and glow plugs and it will fire right on up. The car has some body issues but has a nice interior and is $350.

And has anybody noticed the price of fuel dropped $.50 a month ago? Add this to diesel being consistently 15-20% more than cost of gasoline and suddenly diesels arent as important as they were, say in September.

But its still the 240D's that are the ones to watch. Couple of months ago you couldnt touch em under $2,000 on ebay. Now they're once again at/below $1,000 where they bottomed out years ago...... the same cars with about 200k miles and sometimes a little rust getting kicked around like cheap timex watches that never fail, just because owners get tired of looking at em.

Meanwhile MB interiors are ALWAYS in excellent condition. Why do buyers and sellers even bother mentioning this obvious fact?

I saw a girl talking to two guys in the parking lot at work today when I got there, she had either a 300d or 240, I couldn't see the trunk badges, but I could hear it....it sounded little and clattery (still quite cold she'd just started it) I'll bet it was a 240d..... I want a manual one, that'd be cool.

Is this person on the forum? Is this person a kin of diesel don? (I wondered because his sig says his daughters have 240s....and this person was the right age.) Had I not been late for work and had to run inside I'd have driven by and tried to start car-conversation....

A colleague at work bought a 2000 VW Jetta TDI, 100k miles from a neighbor for $6500. It was hard to start, but now runs beautifully after a new battery, fuel filter and glow plugs. I saw it and it's real nice in and out. I would like a deal like that.
