W123 hood hinge trough, compost

W123 hood hinge trough, compost.

Please clean your W123 hood hinge trough.
There are drains in there, and if they get plugged, well, look at the pictures, they are better than words.
This is a MAJOR corrosion area on the W123 body...

The hood hinges and the space below where they fold into I believe....looks a lot different on a 123 than a 126.....

yeah, on brownie the mice had made a little bed on each side and since the car was onytused in the summer it made a wonderful winter home. the mice also got onto the top of the fuel tank(yes they did ) and into the rear wheel well where the jack goes . i have since fiberglass clothed the areas tightly. another area liked by the mice was next to the right front headlight.

This is where the hinge folds away.
The pictures illustrate the mass of mulch and dirt that filled the area on this car.
This caused it to rust through into the passenger compartment.
The following are pictures of another W123 that I welded up the same area.

Wow I cannot believe that rust!!!

My w126 is due for some cleaning...I'll wait until the weather is warm enough that when I go to use the hose on the car I won't end up with a block of ice

Seeing as how these cars can survive with so much rust, the minimal amount on ours is nothing, and we battle it continually, so it barely makes any progress against us....our two cars have tons of life left (decades) at this rate.

Of course you know hood hinge pockets are clean and dry with fully functional drains when hornets make nests there...... yellow jackets and wasps hate alot of moisture and its a very good sign when they set up shop *anywhere* in the car.

But be careful of mice. On Vintage MB's they used to have organic glue wrapped fabric covering electrical harnesses behind the dashboard. And mouses would chomp into wiring insulation - no joke.

Had water on passenger side for the first time, after a few torrential downpours. Cleaned out the drains. Took the black plastic cover of pass. side wheelwell off and it was caked solid with sand, drivers side was clean. Cleaned and now bone dry.

Yes that is a major rust area as is under the battery tray. A good cleaning on most of the cars will keep it from accumulating, but if the rust has already started.....
