should I buy? '80 SD

It's local to me, has an ok interior (2 small cracks in wood, and some wear on the seats), chrome is all good, floors are solid, 160k miles major rust in the wheel wells. What's it worth once the tie rods fixed and running?

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! DON'T BUY IT!!!!!!!!

That car is a heap!! It will do nothing except drain your bank account and for what? A car that's worth $300?

A wise man once said: "The most expensive Mercedes is a cheap Mercedes"

I have a 1980 300SD parts car out in my back lot at the shop that is in WAY better condition than that thing!

It depends.

If you're looking for a car to fix up into something nice and keep for a long time, skip it.

OTOH, if you just want to throw some minimal repairs at it in order to get it back on the road and then drive it into the ground, this could be a good deal.

Heck no!!! Don't buy that piece of junk! (or piece of rust) I was almost compelled to curse! That "car" makes me want to find a NA 300D engine and bring my parts car back to life. Suddenly it doesn't seem that bad. No rust and a good suspension. Hmmmmm....
Why on earth are the bids already at the $300 dollar level???? Also, those seats almost look as if they are leather....
I'm so shocked after seeing that car that I think I will call it a night....

No to Rust heap

In California the cars I saw in the Pick-n-Pull yards are in much much better shape. I will not buy a car like this to drive in - it's downright dangerous. You do not know what else is rusted that may give way when you are going 60 mph. For $350, it is probably OK to buy it for parts if the engine is running good (140K), and the transmission shifts fine. For states that have safety inspection, this will not pass!

yeah

that looks as if it has been sitting there for a long time. it looks to have sunk into the ground from freeze thaw. how long? ten years? the front suspension looks as if it might break away from the body/chassis. i would be impressed if it ran. if it runs then it might be good for parts. is the window stuck open? if so it has been sitting there filling with water for god knows how long.

parts only! and only if i knew something worth whatever i paid for it was actually good on the car.

best to keep looking. there are deals out there. i bought a pretty good 240 once that needed filters changed and had a stuck caliper for $1700, changed the caliper and filters and drove it home from ohio (280 miles). my son has that one now. it turned out to be a very nice car.

I've decided on no, because my father and I have a habit of putting too much repairs into cars. It's been sitting for 6 months outside right there, the other year was spent in a barn. It's a michigan car its entire life hence the rust. There is no water damage from the window (stuck in the down position) which is hard to believe. Like I said the interior looked nice. Would make a great parts car for someone with a W116.

That cars a pile. I'd strip whatever usefull parts you could off it and have it towed away to the crusher.
