Wonder whether this one has a newer head?
That one will not fit my 300sdl. Most engines claim to be tested etc. One I had a bid from was still being driven. 603 is a little harder to find.

Huh? I can assure you that an engine from a 1987 300D will indeed fit your 300SDL. You may need to swap some minor things, such as the oil cooler lines.

O.K., I am trying to keep it as original as possable. By the book so to speak.

I had a adsit tranny in my 81 300sd when I bought it with a bad tranny!!! Bought in 04 ,tranny was slipping and the working pressure was at about 75 lbs. whhen it should have been at 165lbs. Tranny was installed in 01 with hardly miles put on the car since install!!!! My tranny man went threw it the right way!! He told me that there was some seals that never got replaced that were as hard as a rock!!! and blown!!! And a bad valve body Working sweet now!!! Total cost of tranny with reconditioned valve body was 1070.00

One of the local MB shops had a very nice I think it was a 1993 300SD. Anyway similer 603. The guy had let his wife drive it and a hose let go, she kept driving. The temp sending unit melted out of the head! The shop owner had it on his desk as his new paper weight!

The engine was gone, the pistons had scored the liners and the head was warped like some cheap lumber. When I was there he was pricing out rebuilds, I don't know what eventually came of it.

300 SDL: Used engine or new head?

Still not sure if this is an option but it will be about the same price, $1800 for each. My bottom was in great condition, just not sure how long or what damage my wife did when she "blew it up!" Any and all suggestions or comments are welcome.

Well if the bottom end is tight then that is a known factor. A used engine is a crap shoot. $1,800 I am assuming is for a refurbed later head? Like a 17 or 18 with new valves and pre chambers?

I'd just swap out the heads.

i'd go for the #17 or 18 head rather than a #14 head used engine ....
