603 vac pump R&R?
Anyone know how I'd go about installing the updated vac pump properly on my SDL? My OE one has me worried as it sounds like it's ticking loudly from there at higher RPM...
Thanks!

Eric,
I don't believe there is much to it. However, getting setting the pump with the cam under tension might be an issue. I've not done it personally, but Hattie has. He'll give you the dope. |

I found a few picture from GSXR's site for that cam but I'm not sure what I'm viewing on how the pump is orientated. I understand it rides around but can't figure out how exactly it does so.

Okay from viewing the attached picture in this thread (wait until the end), it appears the vertical bearing is the one that likes to crap out on the early pumps. It's probably also why my motor has a bit of a rattle as it's not IP timing. Karl is parked until I install this new pump, have to order the gasket here.
It seems that roller rides only on that cam shown earlier. Since these pictures are not three dimensional, I can only assume the wear places are the high points on that cam and need to be in a 12/6 o'clock position when installing the new pump. Am I on the right track? Also, I saw a few different gaskets available for these... any word on which I'd need?

When I replaced my vacuum pump (preventative maintenance like yourself) I had no problem mounting the new pump, although I may have just been lucky that the cam was not putting the Vac Pump piston under too much tension. You can use a socket on the crank pulley to move it around if its a problem.
I'm trying to remember about the gaskets. I am fairly certain the later design has raised silicone inserts to help seal the joint. The earlier ones were just a plain fibre gasket. BTW the problem with the earlier pumps is not so much that the bearing might fail (the later ones will also eventually) but that when they do fail the balls can escape and fall into the engine with potentially dire consequences The later design has an encapsulated bearing to prevent this possibilty.

Yes, I'm not wanting to have my motor self destruct after all the work I've put into this car.
My car was built early '87 as I recall so I think I'd need that later gasket. I read up on some basket or something on here but don't recall seeing one (if I know what it looks like!) when I pulled this pump off the car.

The gasket I got with mine was a metal coated with rubber or silicone I believe. My car had a metal basket that looked like it would try to contain any pieces that would come loose but most likly would not do anything. My pump was the source of a oil leak on the front of the motor it was leaking from under the cover.Do make sure it is on the low side of the ramp so you do not over stress the bolts when tightening them up.

See my pump I picked up used, so I'm not sure what gasket to use as when I looked its said something about differet block numbers.
Also, any idea what the torque spec is for those bolts?

No worries this is really a super simple job. Just unbolt the old pump have a rag underneath it since a small amount of oil could drip down. Clean the gasket surface and stick the new pump on. If the new pump does not slide in easy and sit flush against the block just put a wrench on a crank pully and spin the engine around slowly until it does.
That roller bearing you see in the pic above rides on a lobe inside the enigne. This is what makes the pump, pump. That lobe sometimes needs to be rotated so you are not trying to compress the pump while putting it on. Simple job should take less then an hour start to finish if you take your time.

Good deal, I must do this ASAP.
Then throw in a set of balanced injectors, the motor should be nice and quiet then... I hope.
