It's not an overloard relay, it's an overvoltage protection relay. It's function is the blow the fuse(s) on top if the supply voltage exceeds 22 volts thereby protecting the ABS and ECU computers.
It's located between the two firewalls and has either one or two fuses on top.

Thank you kindly for your response....I will take a look in the morning. Is it between the fire walls over by the battery? Rick |

In the 300SD, it's in the fuse box: rear, second row from back, towards the cars midline. Red/orange fuse holder, red fuse (should be red at least, 10A). Can't miss it.

NEED more help
I looked and looked and looked and can't find it.
I didn't see it in the fuse box....5 ice cube relays....2 black box relays. I looked between the two fire walls and didn't see it. I even looked under the driver and passenger kick panel and nothing. Anyone have any clues? The car was in bad shape when I got it and I am curious if perhaps one of the "ice cube" relays in the fuse box shouldn't be there. Anyone have a diagram or a picture that would help me out? Its an 83 300SD. Rick |

if you do a search on fastlane for the relay number 201-540-08-45 you get the relay number on fastlane as P2056-18124, when i do a search on the mercedes epc it says the 201-540-08-45 was only used after model year 1985 (see picture below) so as i said the 1983 300SD 126.120 does not have the OV relay like the one you posted above, if it did it would be in the fuse box with the other relays, the fastlane catalog is mistaken, i use one of the same suppliers that fastlane uses, (worldpac) they also show in their system and that it applies to the 126.120, they are also mistaken. the mercedes EPC is the most accurate source for cross reference of part numbers, so i will have to go by what they say. Thank you.....problem resolved
Thank you guys..........I rechecked again just to be sure and I am confident the bigger...better overload protection relay is NOT present on my car. I even vacuumed out the firewall just to be sure the relay wasn't hiding!

Relax, it is Christmas.

After a good nights sleep, I do not recall seeing it before 1985, that was the year of change, and last year of OM617 W126 300SD production. The OVP is on the 1985 300SD; I walked out to my daily driver (1985 300SD) and checked. |
