Where did the "O" ring go?

On a couple of posts lately, I have lamented my awful oil leak which developed so suddenly. My drive way is a mess, my garage is a mess, even the local street shows my oil weary path! Well, in checking, it was obviously the turbo oil return. Bajaman came over from Lafayette this AM to help me with this repair. Wow, it was so difficult for him to get it apart - for a while I thought it never would come apart. Then, all of a sudden like "Bingo" and he pulls the tube and what was remaining of the grommet out. But there was no lower "O" ring. Does anyone know or had experience where the "O" ring breaks and falls into the oil pan. It must have been on the car when I bought it in April. I have put about 7000 miles on it and only recently did it develope that awful oil leak. Bajaman pressured the crankcase this morning when the car was running by feeding the crankcase vent, (PCVent) into the air cleaner oil return, and that additional pressure just had that oil flying out of the grommet. We also replaced the upper "O" ring in the tube, and we pulled the aircleaner oil return tube and put a new "O" ring on it. Then we pulled the VC and adjusted the valves. The car has been running and starting so well, that I expected all the valves to be in perfect adjustment, but all were very tight. Now I have the rest of the Christmas break to redo upper arms and bushings. If the warm weather holds, I will jump on that Monday. It is not bad working in an unheated garage with the temperature in the 40's. Have a Merry Christmas, Everyone!

What happened to my "O"ring - second time?

I thought I would bump this up again, no responce first time around. As I mentioned we pulled the turbo drain out of the lower block, and when it came out there was no "O" ring. Do you think it is in the pan? If it is in the oil pan, could it be a problem? The lower pan is not leaking and I would just as soon not remove it if there is no chance of damage. We also pulled the tube out of my parts car engine. It was hard to get out also, with the engine on the garage floor, but it did come out with the "O" ring.

Hi Jim
I did my turbo drain repair on Dec 23rd, and like you, there was no o-ring on the lower tube going into the pan, just the grommet, which disintigrated as soon as I touched it. I only assume that hte o-ring was lodged in the grommet, or had fallen into the pan long ago. I installed a new gasket, 2 o-rings and a grommet, and also replacedthe O-Ring on the breather below the lower air cleaner assembly.

No more leaks!

Good to hear

Thanks RedassigOO, it looks like we both did the same job, you did yours a day before. Do you think the pieces will come out in a oil change, or do you think it might pay to fish around with a piece of wire in the drain hole. It might be close to the drain hole and maybe we could fish them out.

I solved this much cheaper and easier than taking it apart....I did the job in the below picture 5 months/7k ago, not a drop has leaked since! :D

Using sealant to fix the drain tube:

Jim,
When I ordered the parts, I ordered the pan gasket too, since I wanted to knock out all the leaks, but there were little bits and pieces of the grommet etc in the pan.

A different fix, yes siree!

Hey PAwoSD, you did complete a pretty good fix there, and I bet it did take less time then what it took Bajaman and me to fix mine. Now that it is done, I do prefer mine, but it is not something that we have to look at very often, and if yours is keeping that black lube off those Grand Rapids streets, what more can you ask. I'm partial too those GR streets, my Dad worked on a paving crew for a couple of summers, paving Franklin street and the Franklin Street Viaduct. He was a student at Calvin Seminary back in the early to mid 20's, and that is a long time ago. He drove a Model "T" Ford with a dump body, hauling cement, sand and gravel - can you believe it.
And to my buddy RedassigOO, I am going to do as he did, still pull the pan when I do the oil and filter in January. Have the pan gasket, and I just don't like the thought of bits of hard rubber compound bouncing around down there. Tomorrow AM, I am going to install new upper control arms and bushings. I'm pretty old and probably can't get in done in under two days.
