83 300DT Turbo Diesel Wagon Starts Hard

The dealership has an 83 Mercedes 300DT that we use for errands, trips to auctions, etc. It has 325k miles on it and runs well. Did a transmission overhaul and now it shifts fine, too.

One problem that I have not solved is the hard starting when cold. It fires but stalls. If you give it just a little throttle, it starts just fine. My guess is that the "fast idle" or "advance" mechanism on the injector pump is not working.

Thoughts?

Minor air leak in the fuel system? Have you replaced the primer pump? If it idles fine once warmed up, I doubt it is an idle adjustment problem since I can detect no difference in the idle speed on mine cold or warm.
The manual does describe 3 different starting techniques for different temperatures. Perhaps adopting these techniques might help. They are something like one pump about 32 degrees, and no throttle pressure. Three pumps between 32 and 20 degress and no throttle pressure. Below 20' degrees, a few pumps and full throttle. (these are approximations from memory).

Never detected any air leaks. No loping once it starts. Just seems to want a little throttle to get going.

Oh well, after 23 years and 325k miles, it deserves a few odd preferences.

My 240D is sorta like that. I took off the spin-on filter cold once, and was surprised to find it only half full. The filter seems to drain back to the tank overnight. I haven't found the offending part yet, but I plan on replacing the fuel filter o-rings and the clear fuel lines, along with all the copper washers.
