red, the PS pump on my car is like that as well, perhaps the later ones are different. To take off the filter you have to push that white cylindrical part down which will compress the spring and allow you to undo the nut.

Guys,
thanks for all the replies. Heres a pic I just snapped. I'm having trouble understanding how to remove the deal my screwdriver is pointing at..... How do you remove that push nut? Do I replace it with a new one?

I think I win the award for the nastiest fluid....

Nice pic Doesn't that nut screw off when you push down on the spring???

Mine did. I followed DG's SBS to change PS F and filter....

Hmmm,
I'll have to tinker with it this weekend. I have a new filter and lots of TypeF for it, so hopefully I can clean her up a little bit!
Thansk for the replies!

I've seen much worse fluid

Atlesast your doesn't look as dark as the motor oil.

My 300SD was like that when I got it.

All fixed now.

Type "F" is more contemporary to your car than type "A". It also has slightly better lubricating properties than "Dex". The bottles of "F" that I have around right now say on them ... approved for power steering use where ATF is specified.
I rebuild an occasional tranny and type "F" or M1 synthetic are what I use ...even in GM trannys. Type "A" would work in you MB PS, but why use an "antique" fluid when you can use a perfectly acceptable, if not completely better, fluid. Type "A" is still here and there, but "F" should be far easier to find . M1 synthetic would be even better, but you might have old, dirty, worn out seals start leaking due to the detergent properties of synthetics.
If I were starting off with a freshly rebuilt or new MB PS system on a 70's or 80's MB, I would use M1(Mobile 1). Later.

do yourself a favor and use valvoline power steering fluid from autozone.
I have cured many power steering leaks by just removing the dextron and replacing with power steering fluid.
Just MY experience!

I just took a shop towel, and carefully pulled the washer off, making sure not to pull it off too fast. I've heard that by pulling it fast, some have lost the retaining spring when it flies off or have gotten injuries from the flying spring.

The threaded rod that the clip and spring is on, will unscrew from the pump. Seems like half the time the rod comes out instead of the nut that I am trying to undo. Either way, I can get the filter out, and plop in a new one.
