Hang the engine!

I just want the good tranny from this car.

I've tried it both ways (engine alone/engine with tranny) don't see that it's that much easier one way or the other.

I know for a fact that I did NOT pull those TC bolts before separating the two last time. I switched the TC from one engine to the other OUT of the car.

Jay.

Bump!

Somebody please tell me I don't have to disassemble the bottom end of this (seized) engine in order to get the tranny off the crank!

I don't think you have to open up the engine at all.
(not even sure what that would do for you)
And you have done this before, leaving the TC on the flywheel.
So I suppose (having done this) you definitly got all the bolts out.

Do you have any separation at all between the trans and engine ?
Any sense that the two are moving apart ?
The trans should definitly rotate if free.

Flywheel.

I haven't ever gotten one this old apart, though. Are there any major differences between the older trannies and the newer ones that would make it impossible to ('80 240D) remove the transmission without removing the TC bolts from the flex plate? The last time I did this was on an '82 TD; we left the torque converter on the engine (i.e. TC bolts in place).

The thing I'm up against is a FLYWHEEL/FLEX PLATE that won't move (because the engine is seized). Because I can't rotate the flywheel, I can't get to the TC bolts, dig?

This is a good tranny, and I'd prefer to have it remain functional post-removal. The car is going to the crusher soon. Anybody need anything from it before I send it off to the last roundup (palomino interior in fair condition, light yellow exterior, also in fair condition, good head (the engine!), lots of other bits).

By the way, would a four-cylinder with an auto have about the right length driveshaft for a five-pot with a manual? Just curious....

Got it!

Took two people, but we were able to get that tranny free. Had a friend reach in through the starter opening and get a pry bar behind the torque converter. I got underneath and grabbed the tranny mount and the rear subframe and started pullin' and wigglin'. POP! TC still securely bolted to the flex plate.

Fyi

Looks like there is a peg that keeps the TC from falling out during removal/installation on some auto 'boxes. It appears to be plastic, and protrudes into the inside of the bell housing, coming from the bottom. The peg just slides in, but has to be rotated until the notch on the peg lines up with the slot on the bell housing. NOT an easy thing to remove unless you've got the transmission out of the car.
