I'd be lost if it weren't for this message board!
I finally cured the injector leak that has been plaguing my car since last Summer. I didn't drive it all year (college), but I decided to take the time this summer to fix that, along with some other problems. Thanks a whole bunch to everybody who gave me advice! Especially MDLwolf and Motorhead.
If anyone ever finds their injectors leaking from the middle, take them apart and lap the surfaces! Everyone was so quick to accuse the injector return lines. Anyways, now that my injectors are in good shape and I'm not killing brain cells from inhaling baked diesel fumes, I'm going to start on a few other things. Namely: - Rebuild the seats with pool noodles and fix any broken springs. I have a 124; is it a job to pull the electric seats? - Brakes. I've done things like pull injectors, and convert a car to run on WVO, but I've never done brakes. - Someone backed into the front of my car before I owned it. Consequently, the grille is cracked, and the headlight assemblies are cracked. I have a replacement grille that I got from ******** (it doesn't have a slot for the release handle, does anyone have any experience in installing a new grille?), and I'm hoping to find a local junkyard (anyone know of any in San Diego?) where I can get my hands on some headlight assemblies. How hard is it to swap out the headlight assembly? - Often times I get a clunk when I stop accelerating in lower gears (I think the clunk is a 2-1 shift), and it feels like my car is being kicked in the butt. Is this just an old transmission? Does my rear diff. need some lube? Some sort of vac problem? Lots of questions! Someday, with the help of you folks, I'll have the smarts and experience to reciprocate!

Also, today when changing my oil, I had a novel idea. So my car has this pesky oil leak (some of which is a leaky head gasket) that is too complicated and expensive to troubleshoot/fix. My dad is always yelling at me for leaving the car in the driveway because in any given 24 hours, the car will leave an inch diameter puddle of cement-staining oil. So today, while changing my oil, it occurred to me: Why not line the drip pan that sits below the sump with cat litter? I mean, the oil drips down from the engine into the pan, and then onto the ground, so if there was a barrier of cat litter set up along the perimeter of the pan, then the oil would be absorbed before it could leak out! I'm not sure how well its working, but I'll report back.

I do hope you mean valve cover gasket, not head gasket...

I meant head gasket...
When I first got the car two years ago and had the dealers inspect it, they told me that it had a leaky head gasket. I figured that that was why the car leaked oil. I haven't had any overheating problems or any oil in coolant problems in two years so I think I'm alright.

wow, that is odd. but for the record, a leaking head gasket would not cause an oil leak externally. oil in the coolant yes, coolant in the oil yes, overheating yes. external oil leak, no. keep us posted on the KL... I would think it would just spill out on drives. once it got soaked, it would stay put, but I don't think it would be a good solution. maybe put down a pad and put kitty litter on the pad where you park? anyway, good luck.

Also, I forgot to mention: My brakes are really stiff. Once again, I hadn't driven this car in a while; could sitting for a long time cause brake stiffness?

If the calipers are binding up, or if there is a vacuum leak at the booster, of if there is a failing booster.

What do you mean by 'lap' the surface of the injectors? When you put pool noodles in your seats, be careful not to overdo it. They work great but it's easy to over-stiffen the seats and put yourself at risk of "dead derrier syndrome" on road trips. They probably have a pill for that. Also, if the 124 power seats are configged like a 126, the job's really simple - a bolt at each corner. Tighten all the nuts/bolts while you have them out (my 126 quit moving forward/back because of a loose bolt).

I havent seen it on a Benz personally, but my wife had a '97 neon, metal-layered-sandwitch head gasket- a known failure point on early neons - it caused her to lose about a qt every few weeks, from dripping out the back of the engine (and onto our apartment's parking lot). Oil leaking out of an engine does not rule out a leaking head gasket...
...but its one of the worst places to have one. -John
