Exactly what MB is this?????

I have driven past this car for 2-3 months now, and finally stopped to look at it. It is in a fenced in field next to a used appliance store.
The VIN is 114 011 12 001616. It has a 4 cyl diesel engine, although it says 250C on trunk? Key was broken off in ignition, but could use the piece that was left to start it. It had a pull knob for I think glow, with that round button thing that I can't currently remember what yall call it. (poor sentence structure there )
Car was fairly clean inside and out, with some rust along driver door lower jam. Fairly new carpet, seats were OK. Headliner very good. Cool steering wheel and dash.
Why on God's green earth am I cursed with SMOKE!? Good gravy, I just thought my '80 wagon smoked. First, this car idled at what seemed to be 1/4 to 1/3 throttle. WAY too fast. Little bitty IP, with throttle stuff on opposite side of valve cover on what appeared to be the intake. Seemed like some kind of butterfly shutoff. Old hat to yall, but new stuff for me. Oh, the smoke....Blackish gray, and about as think as I believe would be possible. Didn't drive it that day as time was short, but it went from drive to rev. without issues. (too bad, automatic)
What the heck kind of car is this? Seems like he said it was a 70 or 72, somewhere in there.
Pics are from my phone, so poor quality.
Started at $1500 when I walked up. $1000 bucks fairly quickly. Moved to 'make offer,we want it gone'.
Very presentable appearance wise, but good Lord at the smoke!

Obviously not a 250C Coupe.

Looks like a 220D but that would be a 115 chassis.

Might be the victim of an engine swap (or a vin swap).

Smoke like that could be a bad IP pnumatic governor diaphram.

You need that heap about like you need a Volvo diesel.

They both taunt me! Looks like the vin is for a 6cyl gasser from what I can tell. That explains why the glow knob and that round button looking thing were on a plate, left knee area. Looked OK, not really fabricated, but as I think to pics I've seen, the knob and button-thing are usually on dash behind steering wheel I believe.
Just curious. This one is in NO danger of following me home! I'm saving for a front end rebuild.....

yeah

that is a 115 chassis, right? must be converted from gas, and has wrong trunk lid. still might be ok for a grand.

wouldnt be surprised if 500 would do it.

I just ran the plates, registration goes back to a 1971 MB, your VIN matches the one the plate goes back to. Last registered in Farmers Branch, Texas.

PM for more info.

If not for the heavy black/gray smoke I'd be comfortable around that. It was pretty clean. I may have to go back and get the engine #, but I think I've done all the smoke I can handle.
How much work is it to do the IP governor diaphram, or to check it. that sure was a little IP.....

Jimmy, I have heard that the diaphram is a relatively simple and cheap fix. The main problem might be to find someone who understands the old type IP's.

Even so, I would avoid a Frankenstein car like that one. It just ain't worth the hassles.

And those Volvo diesels are piles of poope also.

My boss had a new one years ago. Seems like it was always broke.

When he turned it back in at the end of the lease, they promptly crushed it.

There, feel better now????

Regardless of the current VIN, based on the single round headlites and parking lites under them, I really think that this has always been a 4-cyl car. Maybe a gasser and not a diesel, but isn't this just the classic W115 front end we are looking at here? The 250C emblem could easily have been added to the trunk at some point. And the conversion to diesel was not uncommon in the late 70's, as the price of fuel went up. This would explain the gorilla knob on a panel instead of being located in the normal location. Friend here used to have a 230 or 250 sedan that was converted in Ok City to essentially be a 220D. Very professionally done, and daughters convinced him to get it re-badged as a 220D!!

250...

According to the chart at Metric Motors, the vin of 114.011 is a 250 built '70-72 using the M130 6 cyl.

Appears that somebody dropped a diesel in it and put a coupe badge on the trunk.

This assumes it is US spec -
