Spin-On Filter Replaced! - Pictures!!
So I finally got around to replacing my spin on filter today, spilled fuel all over my hands and such thanks to the filter drooling when I took it off, and the awesome original hand primer pump. Anyways, I had a bunch of copper crush washers on hand, but it turns out they were too small The one it requires is large and skinny...so I reheated the old one, then reused it, so far it does not appear to be leaking, if it does I'll get a correct washer and re-do it.
I took it for a spin afterwards, and WOW do I have my power back!! It squealed the tires going into 2nd when I pulled out onto the main road! Standing start acceleration is way better, and it revs faster and higher now. I am very pleased with the results, and because of this I decided to tear open the old one to see how dirty it was. And now for the pictures, I dremeled the old filter casing apart, and this is what I found, it was DIRTY!! (that paper element was white when new). This is after around 22k miles or so. Pics:

I am using a regular vice grip wrench, as it does not have to be on that tight according to specs (20nm or ~15ft/lbs) However, mine is now leaking like heck.... This is not good! How do I stop this leaking?? I went to the stealer and they gave me two volvo 18mm rings (had no mb ones in stock ) and those worked even worse! It was drooling/pulsing fuel out where that bolt goes in! They are identical except that the volvo rings are a little wider overall, same 18mm inside, and same thickness, just the outer edge part is wider. Why would these not work???

Is there a 19MM orifice bolt down through the top of the filter mount housing like the 601-606 filters have? Both 617s and their 601-06 brethren use the same filter design. Photograph and post the filter mount.

After you put on the NEW "O" ring on. YOU MUST PUT SOME OIL ON IT! If you don't, the DRY "O" ring will probably break & cause a leak. With the new "O" ring the bolt should go in SNUG. If not you have the wrong size "O" ring

I just figured this out while I was messing with it a few minutes ago, the rubber o-ring on it was flat and useless, so I put on a new one, and now it slides in there pretty darn snug! I will try it this way and see if it fixes the leak....lets hope....

pawoSD, You're o-ring is totally flat based on the photo i.e., old needs replacing. But you figured that out. That inner seal is to keep the filtered unfiltered fuel apart.
also, you should be able to hold the filter and tighten the bolt to get the best seal. don't bother turning the filter, turn the bolt, it will seal tighter and you won't mangle the filter. The 601 based filter bracket uses a orifice bolt w/2 o-rings one above and below the orifice in the center and no copper ring. You're filter head has been updated and requires the following parts and to permanently eliminate the leakage. 615 092 02 08-fliter head 615 990 08 63-bolt 000 997 00 48-seal (copper)

I finally got it to stop leaking, I changed that o-ring (with an oil-filter covero-ring....it worked and was snug) I then reused the old copper washer on top, and then bolted it on nice and tight (what I had to do 22k ago when I put on the one I took off today) So far so good, ran it about 15 mins, drove a little came back and checked and there was no visible fuel anywhere or wetness, so it appears to be all set. When I do it again in the future I am going to get those updated parts, thanks for listing those!
Glad I stopped the leak! I saw cash drooling away each time I started it and had it drooling into my "abyss" container underneath. I bet I lost nearly a gallon overall with this today.

Mine leaks around the bolt unless I use two copper washers and tighten it down until I just about strip the filter.
I can't figure out why I replaced the bolt with a new one, and filled the housing it seems flat? I know I have the right crush washers I got them from both the dealer and Phil, both used the vin and both sent me the same washers.
