W210 light bulb question

I wonder if it's safe to change the light bulbs for high beam and low beam from 55w to 70w. BTW 1998 E300 turbo diesel. Thanx

You shouldn't increase the load to the headlamps, or you could damage the circuitry which senses their current and informs you via the multifunction indicator (aka odometer panel).

So the answer is no.

why would they sell them if it's unsafe? They look so nice, it's like xenon. Found them at Circuit city.

Not all cars have sensors on the headlight circuits.
Not all owners are worried about running legal lamps (those probably are not legal in the US).

Circuit City has absolutely no idea what is appropriate for your car, and they have no idea which of their products, if any, will harm your car necessitating expensive repairs.

But it is your car, and thus your call. The extra 15W per side may not be enough to matter, but you have been warned.

Note that even if there are no sensors that can be damaged, you are now asking for more than one more amp per side. That's more heat in the wiring, switches, and of course, the headlight assemblies. I don't want to melt any of those things either.

Also note that the xenons (real xenon bulbs anyway) take far less current than incandescent headlight bulbs, but supposedly you can't retrofit the xenon lamps to your car.
