Buying a diesel compression tester (kit) .
I maintain (break) a few diesel MBs and VWs and any diesel I can get my hands on for family and friends. So I am looking to get a compression test kit. I found a few and was wondering if anyone could advise for or against any particular ones.
Amercan Diesel Compression Test kit -- $108.00 with 7 total adapters to fit MB, VW, Volvo, Toyota, Nissan, Ford .... That does not seem a bad deal. Made by Star Products. But the tester itself is only $35 or so. Milton Industries without Adapters -- $71.00 Adapters start at around 12.00 for MB and VW injector it looks like. MightyVac Digital Kit -- $199.00 Heck here is a page that has all of these. . Anyone have any suggestions for a poor shadetree mechanic? I would rather spend $100 than $200 however in the long run I also I would rather spend $200 on one good tool than $200 on two or three crappy tools :) if for nothing else than the enjoyment of using a nice tool. thanks |
I wish I could help. I have always just had diesels tested by a mechanic I trust. I will fiddle with the gassers, but take diesel engine issues to a mechanic.

Hrbor freight has a Diesel tester but I think it is about $150. It also has many adaptors. Mighty-Vacs are also available for about $35.

Whichever one you decide to buy, consider putting it in the rental pool. I'm confident that you will easily earn your purchase price back if the rental amount is reasonable. We don't have a compression tester in the pool right now and we need it.

Will do.

Anyone know what MBs have "24MM" injector ports? |
the hard part, for me, was finding the adaptor,(for GP & injectors with 90 degree L bow) not even the old reliable "snap on" guy could find one for me. Finally found a tool outfit back in NJ that had them. I've been looking for my receipt.

The 90 degree elbow is a lifesaver in a lot of situations...make sure whatever one you score up you have this attachment (or the means to make one)

This is the one I have.

I would put it in the rental program after the ol tuck is fixed. Came with the adapters for the Ford IDI 7.3 injector and the GM and MB glow plugs. Doug |
