can't unlatch trunk

Sorry to monopolize the forum this evening, but this W123 240D I just bought is dealing me fits...the trunk won't open. The key fits in the cylinder, but the key also turns much farther than on my other M-B's and doesn't engage the latch. How do I get in the trunk? The vacuum must be screwed up too, because the locks don't work with the key in any lock cylinder. I just need to get in there once to fix the latch, but I'm puzzled about how to do that.

Ok, I think yours is stuck in the vac locked position. Try inserting the key, turning counter-clockwise until it stops and push in while the key is turned. This bypasses the vac lock.

Only the driver door has a vac switch to unlock all doors and trunk.

Hopefully you got it open by now. This has happened to me but I cant tell you just how I fixed it, I just kept fiddling with it. Lock the doors, try the trunk key this way and that, all combinations. How I avoid this is.. do NOT open the trunk with the key, open the drivers door to unlock the trunk, I've not had the problem since we use this technique. I think its a W123 anomaly:)

One thing to keep in mind is that the 123 has 2 keys: A standard key and a valet key. The valet key will operate the ignition and doors but not the trunk.

well, I got the trunk open, no surprises, BUT I also blew a big hole in the oil pan when a con rod let go...made quite a mess on the pavement.

" big hole in the oil pan "

Yikes...guess the trunk is the least of your worries, sorry to hear about that  You gona fix it?

Kerry..Canoes are great till the "flat water" turns to "white water" Guess I'm more the "nice warm wheel house with a cup of coffee", kinda guy:)

davestlouis 01-01-2006 08:00 PM

dunno if I'm going to fix it or part it...it's nothing to jump up and down about, a little bit of non-structural rust, fair tex interior, sunroof, all sorts of little piddly problems the PO neglected. I thought I had a parts car lined up but the seller won't return my calls now, so I may be SOL. I don't want to throw good money after bad, so I really don't know.

kerry 01-01-2006 08:16 PM

One would think a con rod about to let go would be able to divert your attention from the trunk. Not so? Or, were you attempting to hide inside?

it really didn't sound all that horrible until it went BOOM. I walked the parking lot and picked up all sorts of interesting pieces of metal sculpture. I don't know diesels and really was just getting started figuring out what was wrong with the car, and in what order to address it.

the car is at the office...I'll get a few pic's this week after I get it on a lift and can get a clear shot at the underside of the car.
