300SD Injector cleaning questions
 

The 'new' injectors (2004) in my 83 SD need cleaning.

Did MB provide a port into which injector cleaner may
be directed? [In my gas cars with FI, one may spray
injector cleaner into the vacuum air line at the brake
booster to clean injectors].

Is it safe to spray injector cleaner into the air intake
at the manifold to clean out the throttle body, etc?

Why do you conclude that "new" injectors are in need of cleaning?

With a diesel, the only way to partially clean them is to use "diesel purge" which is a pint of cleaning solution that is run directly through the main fuel supply. You can do a search on "diesel purge" for the procedure and the benefits.

There is no auxiliary port on a diesel to introduce the purge.

In many cases, if the injector is truly clogged, it must be removed and a special cleaning kit utilized to clean the fine orifices.

You should be aware that many of the replacement injectors utilize substandard nozzles that provide a poor spray pattern. The performance may lead you to conclude that the nozzle is dirty, when, in fact, it's just manufactured poorly and there is no quality control. This subject has also been discussed extensively in the forum. You can search under "nozzle" or the forum member "TomJ" and read about it.

If your car is running fine your injectors don't need cleaning.

Their are two ways to clean injectors, the cheap way and the right way!:D

You can do a diesel purge, a quick search of the archives will show you how.

The only problem with doing this is that crap you stir up can re clog the injector nozzels.

So this leads me to the right way:
Pull the injectors and put them on a stand, any injector with a poor spray pattern needs to be cleaned or fitted with a new nozzel. While they are out the pop pressure should be checked and balanced accross the set.
