240d exhaust options
Since the entire exhaust on my 240d is someplace on 95, I wanted to know my options. I have read some posts where owners have done a straight pipe instead of a resonator and/or muffler. Can something like this be done on a non-turbo engine?
Any ideas from fellow owners on exhaust option from the downpipe to stern? thanks john |
Having heard a 240D running with literally NO exhaust I would just go straight pipe all the way to the "stern" and put a good muffler back there.
The sound difference, atleast in the w123 body with that engine, will be a HUGE improvement over the current lack of exhaust :) The center resonators just eliminated some engine resonance noise but I think you might actually like the little additional rumble at low RPM's :) |
A 240 with no muffler or resonator will sound like Nascar unplugged. My muffler fell off(rust) last Aug. Resonator fell off 3 months previous(rust). Now just have pipe to new muffler, no resonator. No way could I run the car with out one or the other.

blew open my center resonator on the 240, and she is deserving an exhaust from the new downpipe back.
looking to install a freeflow (bosal, ansa, remus?) muffler around the center resonator location, then 2.5" straight pipe back. hopefully this will produce a little throatier sound and a .1% performance improvement.. thoughts?:D |
when my exaust needed to be replaced. i had them put a walker on because i know they are liftime warrented. and also it looks and sounds like the original. they replaced all the way up to the header pipes. it cost somewere around 500$

after i replace my egr and avr i am chopping the muffler off. WHOOO!

I have a loose exhaust manifold, and al I can say is, at idle it's unoticeable, but when you floor it it sounds like a cross between a lawn mower and a VW bug. So can't personally recommend the uncorked sound, but a resonator or muffler delete might be a cool option.

Non-turbo engines DO need a muffler. They need to have some exhaust backpressure to help cool the exhaust valves and it will also help increase low-end torque.

I have 2 complete systems from behind down pipe back, all in one piece, sitting under the house, waiting for when they fall off the wagon and the Squash. I haven't even looked at the one on Scar yet.....

I am running a 2.5" stainless unit into a Borla universal muffler, then into twin split resonators...
I like it... Jake |
2.5" is pretty overkill for a 240D. 2" is more than enough.

thats not a 240D.... :D
