300D Muffler heat shield

on my long drive to california i noticed how my trunk overheated again. right above where the muffler is, it heats up so much that cardboard boxes got burnt brown. i had some plastic bags melt, and not sure why. i went to the local dealer and he asked me if i still had the heatshield under there.

i had no clue that there was supposed to be one under there. was he right, and is there really supposed to be a heat shield for my 85 300d.

any comments on what could be heating up my muffler would be great too.

Excess back pressure can kill the turbo.
Can you afford a new engine?

"and is there really supposed to be a heat shield for my 85 300d. "

The EPC for your vehicle shows no heat shield; only for the gasoline models. I notice yours is a California model. Of course, the T.O. is long gone?

fwiw my car was driven around Fla. for 3 months without the rear muffler present. it was totally full up with soot and fell off. maybe it was a good thing it did

otoh, there is not that much increase in noise with the rear muffler awol, and there were no consequences to the engine that i know of..
it did result in the underside of the car getting dirty , but i guess that's better than frying stuff in the trunk!
