What type of battery does everyone suggest? Is there a better battery to get for diesels? The battery has gone pretty dead from my cranking on cold mornings. 20-30 farenhiet degrees at my place lately. Any help is appreciated.

What kind of battery cables do you have? I was running 4GA wires, untill I melted the end of it off...

I made myself a 1GA cable, and I have faster cranking speed, and faster starts... AND if I melt that thing, I have bigger problems:D

For batterys, go to a battery store, grab the heavy SOB at the end of the rack, and make sure it fits... More CCA is better imho. Dont get the cheap one though, because they last about 2 years before you get to buy a new one...

When mine goes, im going to get an optima battery... Not sure if i want red, yellow, or blue top, but whatever has the most CCA wins

I have an AutoZoo one in the L and DieHard in the SD. Both work well. I've used Interstate in the past also, good battery there.

Get one with the best warranty.

I showed mine last year in a MBCA show and plan on doing so again to OEM MB battary for me. ($125 at the dealer)


The 250 has my old no name diesel battery. Boy does that car start quickly! :D

Better to get a name brand 650 to 750 CCA (cold cranking amps) than a 1000+ CCA from Wally-World. More cca in the same size case just means that the plates are thinner and will warp under a heavy, prolonged cranking load. Here in the Southwest where the summers get really hot 1000 cca batteries don't last long because they can't disperse the heat.

For diesel's that see cold weather I believe you need both high CCA's and a large reserve capacity. As mentioned above if the high current carrying cable of the battery is under-sized you are not going to make full use of whatever battery you have. Even if the under-sized cable does not melt, it will get hotter resulting in higher resistance and lower current flow. Too few CCA's and the engine doesn't spin fast for easy starts.

Interstate MTP-93, Optima or call roadside assistance and they'll install one for you for about $125 or so.

A 1000 too 1300 CCA with heavy reserve capacity is nice, but keep a spare voltage regulator in the car.

Best battery buy is a group 49 from AutoZone. 1000CA and 875 CCA for about $65. The battery is made by Johnson Controls, known for excellent quality batteries. 7 year warranty and all you need to get nationwide warranty service is your phone number. They won't deny your warranty because you can't find the papers like Pep Boys did to me.

I would look for an acid free battery. Like the Interstate Optima SC34R. Comes with a 6 year warranty. I like the gel batteries they perform well and last a long time.
BTW the OEM battery is lead acid.....:eek:
